Sociology Welcomes New Chair

Anthony Paik, professor of sociology and director of the Bachelor’s Degree with Individual Concentration at the University of Massachusetts Amherst has been named chair of the Department of Sociology.

Paik received his BA, MA and PhD from the University of Chicago. His research focuses on several areas, including social networks, formal models, social demography, and sexuality. Currently, Dr. Paik is working on a computational study of cyberbullying, which was funded by National Institute of Justice. His publications include The Sexual Organization of the City (University of Chicago Press, 2004), which he co-edited.  He also has numerous journal articles, which have appeared in outlets, such as the American Sociological Review, Rationality and Society, Journal of Marriage and Family, and Social Science Research.

Paik joined UMass Amherst in 2014 and was previously a member of the faculty at the University of Iowa for more than a decade. At Iowa Dr. Paik was engaged with multiple disciplines through his joint appointments with the Departments of Sociology and Gender, Women’s and Sexuality Studies. He also served as the Director of Social Science Policy at the University of Iowa’s Public Policy Center.
