Sociology Welcomes New Chair

The University of Massachusetts has named Professor Anthony Paik the new chair of the Department of Sociology.

Paik’s research focuses on several areas, including social networks, formal models, social demography, and sexuality. Currently, Dr. Paik is working on a computational study of cyberbullying through a grant from the National Institute of Justice. His publications include The Sexual Organization of the City (University of Chicago Press, 2004), which he co-edited. He also has numerous journal articles, which have appeared in outlets, such as the American Sociological Review, Rationality and Society, Journal of Marriage and Family, and Social Science Research.

"My priorities as chair include supporting our cutting-edge research, promoting an excellent undergraduate education, and fostering an inclusive, equitable environment for staff, students, and faculty," explains Paik.

He received his BA, MA and PhD from the University of Chicago. He joined UMass Amherst in 2014, and was previously a member of the faculty at the University of Iowa for more than a decade.

“Tony has already exhibited leadership qualities in other roles at the University, and I have every confidence that he'll be an outstanding Chair of Sociology," says John Hird, Dean of the UMass College of Social and Behavioral Sciences.
