Sponsors: Cora Marrett, Provost and Javier Cevallos, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs
While all applicants who are offered admission are judged capable of succeeding in the University, some are more likely to need advising, counseling and other support services than others. At present, responsibility for serving this group of students is dispersed across a number of different units, which may make it difficult for students to identify appropriate resources. Coordination and consistency of service can also be difficult to achieve. This project will target the delivery of advising and other services to the highest-risk entering undergraduates from the time of initial contact through the end of the first year and may include services such as recruiting and outreach, admission, orientation, contact with academic departments, contact with support programs, and intervention and referral services.
This project will have two phases. In the first phase, the sponsors will consult with appropriate administrators, faculty, support program staff, students and others to define clearly the student population served, issues affecting their success at the institution, and the current array of services offered. In the second phase, a project team will be assembled to review and assess the main topics and services identified and explore possible improvements.
