Graduate Student Assistant Appointment Process

Sponsor: Cora Marrett, Provost

Recruitment and retention of high quality graduate students impacts the University's missions of teaching, research and outreach. Through assistantships, graduate students are responsible for a portion of undergraduate teaching and make major contributions to the research and scholarly activity of the campus. For many students this appointment is the only arrangement which allows them to attend graduate school. The goal of this review and assessment project is to decrease the amount of time for completing the appointment process for graduate student assistantships. The process is defined as beginning at the point at which the student is made an offer by the funding department to the point at which the student receives his/her first payment for services. The project team will review and assess the current process of appointing graduate students to assistantships and identify new ways to improve the process to meet the stated goals.
