2. Call for Papers: AJS Session on Francophone Sephardim (Sadock)

Date: Thu, 5 Apr 2007 21:59:29 -0400

From: Johann Sadock <jsadock(at)MIT(dot)EDU>

I plan to propose a session for the next AJS convention in Toronto on how French-speaking Sephardim have influenced and shaped contemporary Francophone popular cultures.   I invite those interested in participating in this panel to send me an email as soon a possible to let me know that they intend to submit a proposal and then to send me a short proposal (350 words) no later than April 22.

This session will attempt to better situate the specific contributions of French-speaking Sephardim to  contemporary Francophone popular cultures : from movies such as La vérité si je mens! to the works of directors (Lelouch, Chouraqui, Hanin, Arcady, Jaoui/Bacri, Azuelos and others), playwrights and stand-up comics (Boujenah, Elmaleh and others), comic artists (Wolinski, Joann Sfar and others), musicians (Macias, Bonniche, Moustaki, Régine, Bruel and others), engaged intellectuals (BHL, Gisèle Halimi, Stora and others). Among possible questions to consider: how have French-speaking Sephardic Jews transformed the image of Jews in Francophone countries?  In what ways have French-speaking Sephardim contributed to the orientalization of some of these countries? What values, ideas, products, foods, public spaces have they helped popularize in society and the media? How have French-speaking Sephardic Jews directly contributed to the popularization of various trends?

 Looking to hear from you,

 Johann Sadock

4. Query: Sephardic Sites of Interest in Istanbul (Göran)

From: Göran <gran(dot)sj(at)telia(dot)com>

Date: Sun, 1 Apr 2007 22:18:08 +0200

Could readers inform me if there is a Sephardic museum

or other sites of Sephardic interest in Istanbul?  I am a professor of Spanish and am helping to direct a trip of Swedish students to that city at the beginning of July.  Among their requirements will be to visit relevant sites, as assigned by me.  Please reply directly to me at: Göran <gran(dot)sj(at)telia(dot)com>

Thank you in advance.

Göran Sjöberg
