castellano. Actualmente escribe una biografía de su autor.

Up-date on website: "The Atlantic Slave Trade and Slave Life in the Americas:
a Visual Record <http://hitchcock.itc.virginia.edu/Slavery/>

This searchable collection now contains approximately 1,200 images. Aside from
revising and correcting bibliographic and contextual data, we have expanded
our coverage of West Africa, the Atlantic crossing, the Hispanic areas of
South and Central America, and the Hispanic Caribbean, including Cuba. We also
include, courtesy of the J. Pierpont Morgan Library, four images from Histoire
Naturelle des Indes, the celebrated Drake Manuscript; we believe these images
represent the earliest eye-witness depictions of Africans in the New World.
Although we will continue to occasionally add images, additions will be done
on a very selective basis (e.g., enhancing coverage of an underrepresented New
World area).  We will continue, however, to correct errors as these are
brought to our attention by users of the website or through our own research.
We will also modify the bibliographic entries and historical contexts of the
images as particular needs arise.  The date of the latest up-date to the
website is now shown on the website's front page; we hope this chronological
marker will be useful to viewers who consult the website. The compilers
continue to welcome any corrections to the current bibliographic and
historical information on the website.

Responses from colleagues in various countries over the last several years
continue to be enormously helpful in improving the information in the entries,
thus enhancing the value of this site as a research and teaching tool.

6.  New Blog: Jewish Genealogy (Dardashti)

From: dardasht1(at)yahoo.com
Date: Sun, 20 Aug 2006 19:29:48 -0400

Dear colleagues and friends,

  http://tracingthetribe.blogspot.com is now live.

I began posting to coincide with the 26th IAJGS International Conference on
Jewish Genealogy, just concluded in New York City, and the blog will continue.

I am now working on posting the backlog of sessions covered at the
conference, which offered 280 programs in 23 subject categories over 5 1/2
days, beginning at 8 a.m., and ending at 10-11 p.m. The programs included
lectures, panels, films, concerts and much more.

Blog coverage will include Ashkenazi and Sephardic resources, methodology,
events, books and whatever is going on in the Jewish genealogy world.

I was asked to start this blog by www.jta.org, the Jewish Telegraphic
Agency, a main supplier of news to the media, and there is a big green link to
the blog from the JTA homepage.

We are interested, of course, in reciprocal posting of links -- so please
email me about this.

  With best wishes,

  Schelly Talalay Dardashti

INSTITUTE FOR ADVANCED STUDY
Princeton, New Jersey

ANNOUNCEMENT OF MEMBERSHIPS
IN THE SCHOOL OF HISTORICAL STUDIES for the academic year 2007-2008

THE INSTITUTE FOR ADVANCED STUDY was founded in 1930 as a community of
scholars in which intellectual inquiry can be carried out in the most
favorable circumstances.  It provides Members with offices, access to
libraries, subsidized restaurant and housing facilities, and some secretarial
and word-processing services.

THE SCHOOL OF HISTORICAL STUDIES supports scholarship in all fields of
historical research, but is concerned principally with the history of western,
near eastern and far eastern civilizations, with particular emphasis upon
Greek and Roman civilization, the history of Europe (medieval, early modern,
and modern), the Islamic world, East Asian studies, the history of art, and
modern international relations.  The School also offers the Edward T. Cone
Membership in Music Studies. Qualified candidates of any nationality are
invited to apply for memberships.  Residence in Princeton during term time is
required. The only other obligation of Members is to pursue their own
research. If they wish, Members may participate in seminars and meetings
within the Institute.  There are also ample opportunities for contacts with
scholars at nearby universities.

Approximately forty Members are appointed for either one or two terms each
year.  The Ph.D. (or equivalent) and substantial publications are required of
all candidates at the time of application.  Member awards are funded by the
Institute for Advanced Study or by other sources, including the National
Endowment for the Humanities, the Gerda Henkel Foundation, and the Thyssen
Foundation.

APPLICATION may be made for one or two terms (September to December, January
to April).  Further information and application materials may be found on the
School's web site, www.hs.ias.edu, or they can be obtained from the
Administrative Officer by electronic mail at mzelazny(at)ias.edu.  Inquiries
may also be sent by post to: School of Historical Studies, Institute for
Advanced Study, Einstein Drive, Princeton, New Jersey 08540.  Completed
applications must be returned to the Administrative Officer by 15 November
2006.

OTHER OPPORTUNITIES

MELLON FELLOWSHIPS FOR ASSISTANT PROFESSORS are also offered each year to two
qualified Assistant Professors.  These full-year memberships are designed
specifically for assistant professors at universities and colleges in the
United States and Canada to support promising young scholars who have embarked
on professional careers.  Applicants must have served at least two, and not
more than four years as assistant professors in institutions of higher
learning in the United States or Canada and must have approval to return to
their institution following the period of membership.  Stipends will match the
combined salary and benefits at the Member's home institution at the time of
application, and all the privileges of membership at the Institute for
Advanced Study will apply.  Application materials are the same as for
membership, and can be obtained from the web at www.hs.ias.edu, or by
contacting the Administrative Officer at the address above.

ACLS/FREDERICK BURKHARDT FELLOWSHIPS FOR RECENTLY TENURED SCHOLARS: In the
academic year 2007-2008 the Institute for Advanced Study anticipates it will
again take part in a program sponsored by the American Council of Learned
Societies, the Frederick Burkhardt Fellowships. These fellowships support more
adventurous, more wide-ranging, and longer-term patterns of research than are
current in the humanities and related social sciences. Depending on the
availability of funds, ACLS will provide fellowships for up to eleven recently
tenured faculty, most of whom will spend a year at one of several residential
research centers, including the Institute for Advanced Study. A scholar
applying for the academic year 2007-2008 must normally have begun her/his
tenured contract at a U.S. institution no earlier than the fall 2002 semester
or quarter.

Applicants must submit a research plan, typically covering a three to five
year period; one of the first three years of research could be spent as a
Member at the Institute, either in the School of Historical Studies or the
School of Social Science.

Qualified candidates who would like to apply under the auspices of this
program should visit the ACLS website, http://www.acls.org/burkguid.htm , for
a more detailed description of the terms of the fellowship and information
about how to apply. Applications for this program must be submitted through
the ACLS Online Fellowship Application system (OFA) no later than 9 p.m.,
Eastern Daylight Time, September 28, 2006.  OFA is accessible at http://
ofa.acls.org <http://ofa.acls.org/>   or through the ACLS website.
Information about this program may also be obtained from the ACLS Fellowships
Office, 633 Third Avenue, 8th floor, New York, NY 10017-6795.

 Fellowship Announcement

The Social Science Research Council and the American Council of Learned
Societies announce the 2007 competition of the INTERNATIONAL DISSERTATION
RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP (IDRF) program designed to support distinguished graduate
students in the humanities and social sciences conducting dissertation
research outside the United States.  Fifty fellowships of approximately
$20,000 will be awarded in 2007 with funds provided by the Andrew W. Mellon
Foundation.

The IDRF program is committed to scholarship that advances knowledge about
non-U.S. cultures and societies grounded in empirical and site-specific
research (involving fieldwork, research in archival or manuscript collections,
or quantitative data collection).  The program promotes research that is at
once located in a specific discipline and geographical region and is engaged
with interdisciplinary and cross-regional perspectives.

Applicants must have completed all Ph.D. requirements except on-site
dissertation research by the time the fellowship begins or by December 2007,
whichever comes first.  Fellowships will provide support for nine to twelve
months of dissertation research.  The fellowship must be held for a single
continuous period within the eighteen months between July 2007 and December
2008.

For more detailed information on application procedures and eligibility
requirements, visit the IDRF website at www.ssrc.org/programs/idrf or contact
