1. AJS News: Positions Bulletin, Registration, Registration Deadline (Katchen)
From: Association for Jewish Studies <ajs@brandeis.edu>
Date: Wednesday, November 14, 2001 5:30 PM
Dear Colleagues:
This message is to alert you to the publication of the November issue
of
the AJS Positions Bulletin. It appears on-line in the area reserved for
AJS
members in both web and Adobe Acrobat versions.
The Acrobat version also contains membership and conference registration
forms, which are available online in web format also. We have extended
the
date for receipt of registration and meals reservations until Nov. 26
to
accommodate the many members who have indicated that they have been delayed
in sending in their materials, but we must hold firm to Monday, Nov. 26
as
the final date for receiving advance registration and meals reservations.
[Note from Editor/Moderator Aviva Ben-Ur: Please contact Aaron Katchen
directly for the username for the protected site and the password for
this year, which I've clipped]
The Conference Program is still in press, and will be mailed to you
first-class when ready, but the entire program, as you know, has long-since
been available on the web site. We ask that presenters and chairs pay
careful attention to the time of their session. The locations of individual
sessions will be contained in the printed book. I should alert you also
to
the correct toll-free number for hotel reservations: 1-888-DC-HILTON.
To be
guaranteed a room at the $99.00 rate, please call at your earliest
convenience. Also, our travel agent, Navigant, at at 1-800-370-6664 x4129
is ready to help you with special air and AMTRAK fares. I've taken the
Acela to Washington in recent weeks (to visit the Hilton, which is very
much looking forward to our meeting), and the train is very pleasant,
swift, and reliable. The round-trip special Acela fare from NYC using
Navigant, including the service charge, is approximately $200.00.
Looking forward to seeing you in Washington.
Cordially yours,
Aaron L. Katchen
Executive Director

3. Seeking Archaeologists Specializing in Jewish Iberia (Larkum)
From: Mary Larkum, marushka720@yahoo.co.uk
Date received: Monday, November 12, 2001
I am a Ph.D. student at U.C.L. researching micromorphology and organic
soil chemistry as applied to archaelogy. I also undertake some phytolith
analysis. Although I am currently working in the Middle East (Israel and
Turkey) my preferred field of study is the archaeology of Judaic Iberia.
Unfortunately, I have been unable to locate any other archaeologists working
in this area. Can anyone offer any information? I am eager to develop
collaborative projects and interact with other scholars.

4. Query: Number of Ladino Books Published Worldwide (Ben-Ur)
From: Aviva Ben-Ur <aben-ur@judnea.umass.edu>
Date: Monday, November 19, 2001
For an article I am publishing on the Ladino press, I am seeking a reliable
source estimating the number of Ladino books published worldwide from
1510 through the first half of the 20th century. I am already familiar
with:
C. Ramos-Gil, La Lengua española en Israel, in *Tesoro
de la Literatura de los Sefaradíes*, vol.1, Jerusalem, 1959, XXXVlll.
As cited in Henry V. Besso, Judeo-Spanish Literature Le Judaisme-Sephardi
(December 1961): 1016.
However, I am told that Ramos-Gil's estimate of 5,000 books is unreliable.
I have already consulted with Prof. Aron Rodrigue of Stanford University,
who did not know of reliable secondary sources relating to this question.
Any leads would be most appreciated.
Thanks!

5. Query: Seeking Email Address of Dov Cohen (Ben-Ur)
From: Aviva Ben-Ur <aben-ur@judnea.umass.edu>
Date: Monday, November 19, 2001
I am seeking the email address of Dov Cohen, the young scholar who is
currently compiling a descriptive bibliography of the Ladino holdings
of the Jewish National Library at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
Many thanks in advance.
