This is to announce my non-fiction book, _Essays from Occupied Holy Land_.
The book contains 108 relatively short, informal essays on many
topics, with a number of dominant themes (most of the essays were
written in 2009). It is very critical of Israeli/Zionist policies and
activities. It shows, among other things, how Sephardi/Babylonian
Jewry and Middle Eastern Jewish faith and culture are being
systematically wiped out by Ashkenazi/European Zionists.

4. New Publication: _The Sephardic Anousim_ (Alfassa)

From: Shelomo Alfassa <salfassa(at)gmail(dot)com>
Date: Fri, 14 May 2010 10:40:40 -0400 [05/14/2010 10:40:40 AM EDT]

Shelomo Alfassa, _The Sephardic Anousim_ (2010).

_The Sephardic Anousim_ was written to fill a lacuna in the subject of
the ?anousim? (Hebrew for 'coerced'). The anousim are descendants of
the forcibly converted Jews of Spain and Portugal (in the past known
as marranos). Many tens of thousands of Jews converted in the 14th and
15th century due to violence and religious intimidation-however, many
of these Jews secretly concealed their Judaic observances while acting
like they were newly baptized Catholics. Today, descendants of those
converted Jews are increasingly "coming out" only to find themselves
lost in a sea of complicated Jewish laws; getting deceived by
missionaries; and are frustrated in seeking to fully understand the
history of their own people.

This book explains both the Inquisition as well as the expulsion from
Spain in 1492. It provides first-hand accounts of the worst trials and
tribulations the Jewish people suffered prior to the Holocaust. It
discusses 'crypto-Jews' and controversy related to crypto-Jews. It
examines issues important to the anousim such as halakha (Jewish law),
conversion or return, missionary interference and it highlights the
opinions (responsa) of rabbinical leaders over past centuries in
regard to forcibly converted Jews.

This is two announce four new books by Arnold Reisman. Each one
focuses on specific events that impacted the lives of the Jewish
people. _An Ambassador and A Mensch: The story of a Turkish Diplomat
in Vichy France_ relates the heroic deeds of Behic Erkin and his staff
who saved thousands of Jews in both occupied and Vichy France. Against
the will of Berlin, Vichy, and Ankara, they placed their careers and
lives in jeopardy. _Refugees and Reforms: Turkey?s Journey_ details
the impact that European scholars and scientists had on the creation
of the modern Turkish Republic. Discarded by the Nazis, their lives
were saved by their invitations to Turkey. Along similar lines,
_Shoah: Turkey, the US and the UK_ compares each country?s efforts to
save lives during one of humanity?s darkest hours. _My Enemy?s Enemy_
tells the story of the various all Jewish units in the British army,
starting with the Zion Mule Corps and ending with Israel?s statehood.

11. Goldziher Prize for Jewish-Christian-Muslim Relations Awarded to
Mark Cohen (Cohen)

From: Mark Cohen <mrcohen(at)princeton(dot)edu>
Date: Tue, 29 Jun 2010 15:37:46 -0700 [06/29/2010 06:37:46 PM EDT]

Center for the Study of Jewish-Christian-Muslim Relations Announces
Winner of New Interfaith Award

First Goldziher Prize to be Awarded to Professor Mark Cohen For
Promoting Understanding Across Religious Faiths

Boston (May 17, 2010) The Center for the Study of
Jewish-Christian-Muslim Relations announced on Tuesday May 11th the
first awardee of the Goldziher Prize, Professor Mark Cohen of
Princeton University. The announcement was made at an event at the
Muslim American Society of Boston?s Islamic Cultural Center attended
by members of Boston?s interfaith community. The prize is named for
the 19th century Islamicist, Ignác Goldziher, a Hungarian Jew who
revered Islam and Muslim people and validated Islamic studies in the
19th century European university context.

The prize is being administered by Merrimack College?s Center for the
Study of Jewish-Christian-Muslim Relations. The Center promotes
reverence, understanding and collaboration in works of justice and
peace among Jews, Christians and Muslims.

?The mission of the Center for the Study of Jewish-Christian-Muslim
Relations comes at a critical time as we witness the clash of
civilizations and the conflict between the east and west. The
similarity of Jews and Muslims is woefully forgotten and we need to
realize their commonalities such as their monotheism, the practice of
daily prayers, dietary laws and charity in their daily lives. Being
awarded the Goldziher Prize is both an honor and a challenge, to write
about the past without being tainted by the exigencies of the
present,? said Professor Mark Cohen.

Professor Cohen, The Khedouri A. Zilkha Professor of Jewish
Civilization in the Near East at Princeton University, is the first
winner of the Goldziher prize. Professor Cohen is the author of _Under
Crescent and Cross: The Jews in the Middle Ages_, a powerful study
revealing the advantages for Jews of the Middle Ages of being governed
by Muslims and a work that has been translated into Arabic, Hebrew,
Turkish, French, German; Romanian and Spanish are forthcoming. He is
an ordained rabbi.

At the event, Professor Cohen presented a gift to the Islamic Cultural
Center of an Arabic translation of his book.

?The Center for the Study of Jewish-Christian-Muslim Relations is
proud to join Christian, Muslim and Jewish leaders for interfaith
reverence, understanding and collaboration in works of justice and
peace in announcing the first Goldziher Award to Professor Mark
Cohen,? said Padraic O?Hare, Director of the Center for the Study of
Jewish-Christian-Muslim Relations.

?The Goldziher Award represents the connection of the worlds of
Judaism and Islam and the power of words and ideas that need to be
used as a vehicle for transformation. What we say to each other has a
way of shaping the world and moving it forward in peace,? said Rabbi
David Gordis, President Emeritus of Hebrew College, Director of the
National Center for Jewish Policy Studies and Senior Visiting Scholar,
The University of Albany-SUNY.

?In the Boston area, we?ve worked hard to promote mutual understanding
and respect among all faiths. Interreligious dialogue is complex, but
important in our quest for understanding,? said Father David Michael,
Associate Director, Office of Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs,
Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Boston.

?Our hope is to identify and experience the commonalities among our
faiths,? said Salma Kazmi, a leader in the local Muslim community and
lecturer at Merrimack College.

The Goldziher Prize is a $25,000 cash award, made possible by a
generous grant from The William and Mary Greve Foundation and by the
vision of one of the Foundation?s principals, John Kiser. On October
6, 2010, the prize will be formally presented to Professor Cohen at a
dinner at Brandeis University.

About the Center for the Study of Jewish-Christian-Muslim Relations
Located in North Andover, Massachusetts, Merrimack College is a
Catholic college in the Augustinian tradition.
The Center for the Study of Jewish-Christian-Muslim Relations is the
first program in the world to expand its mission from principally
sponsoring studies in Jewish-Christian relations to include the study
of the relationship of Islam and the Muslim people along with the
other two faith traditions.

Sephardic Books by Shelomo Alfassa On Sale Now

_The Sephardic Anousim_. As Jews, we are obligated to help our fellow.
Why would this not would include the descendants of Jews who converted
to other religions? Today, the ancestors of these Jews are coming out
in high numbers searching for truth. As more and more people come
forward, the anousim situation is one that world Jewry must address
and develop solutions for.

_The Palm Tree of Deborah_ (_Tomer Deborah_) is an ethical discourse
devoted to the doctrine of the imitation of the Almighty. In his book,
Kordovero proceeds systematically through the various known attributes
of God and explains how we as humans can work on improving ourselves
by imitating those attributes to the best of our ability.

_History, Politics and Loss: Selected Writings of Shelomo Alfassá_ is
a collection of 62 papers, both published and unpublished, written
between 1995-2008, on various topics related to history, the political
world and the loss of great Jewish personalities.

_A Window into Old Jerusalem: Observations about Jerusalem and the
Holy Land, 1820-1920_. First hand accounts and observations made about
the Jews of Ottoman Jerusalem and the Holy Land. _A Window Into Old
Jerusalem_, a unique collection of short tales and firsthand
observations about Jewish life in Ottoman Jerusalem and the Holy Land,
by travelers who visited during a critical period of transition.

_Reference Guide to the Nazis and Arabs During the Holocaust_. A
concise guide to the relationship and conspiracy of the Nazis and the
Grand Mufti of Jerusalem in North Africa and the Middle East during
the era of the Holocaust.

_Ethnic Sephardic Jews in the Medical Literature_. Sephardic and
Ashkenazic Jews were geographically and religiously separate
populations. Because of this separation, these two populations often
display significant differences in the incidence of genetic diseases
and medical conditions. This reference book is a comprehensive
collection of bibliographic citations complete with associated
abstracts from the period 1957-2005.

7. New Publication: Seroussi and Havassy, _Incipitario sefardí: El
cancionero judeoespañol en fuentes hebreas (siglos XV-XIX)_ (Havassy)

From: Rivka Havassy <hank(at)netvision(dot)net(dot)il>
Date: Thu, 29 Jul 2010 10:36:10 +0200 [04:36:10 AM EDT]

I would like to inform the members of this forum of the publication of
_Incipitario sefardí: El cancionero judeoespañol en fuentes hebreas
(siglos XV-XIX)_ by Edwin Seroussi with the collaboration of Rivka
Havassy (2009).

Authors of piyutim (paraliturgical poems) often used popular and
traditional melodies for their new compositions. To indicate the
melody they chose, the authors usually cited the opening verse (or
other key words) of the model song. These musical codes are called
Incipits. They can help to reconstruct the musical and poetic world of
these authors and their communities. Incipitario sefardí was a
research project designed to collect the verses from Judeo-Spanish
songs that were used as melodic references in Hebrew manuscripts and
print. This was an international research project supported by the
Israel Science Foundation and is carried in collaboration with the
Departamento de Estudios Sefardíes at the Consejo Nacional de
Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC) in Madrid.

The result is Incipitario sefardí: El cancionero judeoespañol en
fuentes hebreas (siglos XV-XIX), published by the CSIC in 2009. More
than 2000 incipits were found, and they represent 655 Judeo-Spanish
texts. Each entry includes the sources of the incipits, the opening
verses of the piyutim which were sung to their melody (and their
authors, if identified), and commentaries which include possible
identification in old Spanish poetry and in the Sephardi oral tradition.

Prof. Edwin Seroussi received the prestigious Toledano Prize
(Jerusalem, October 2009) for this book.

10. Call for Panelists: "The Jewish Atlantic World" at the Society of
Early Americanists? Seventh Biennial Conference (Leibman)

From: Laura Leibman <leibman(at)reed(dot)edu>
Date: Fri, 09 Jul 2010 13:31:11 -0700 [07/09/2010 04:31:11 PM EDT]
Call for Papers for a Panel on "The Jewish Atlantic World" at the
Society of Early Americanists? Seventh Biennial Conference, 3-5 March
2011, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
<http://www.societyofearlyamericanists.org/conference/2011/index.shtml>.

Description: In June of 2006, Jewish History dedicated a special issue
to the phenomenon of port Jews in the Atlantic World. As editor Lois
Dubin noted, the concept of port Jews was originally coined to
encapsulate the ?distinctive role and experience of Jewish merchants
who lived in dynamic Mediterranean and Atlantic port cities in early
modern Europe.? Dubin and her co-authors, however, followed these Jews
across the Atlantic to the North and South American colonies. This
trans-Atlantic leap mirrors the reality of colonial American Jews. In
their own lifetimes, American port Jews rarely stayed put. Rather,
they traveled between various Atlantic ports on both side of the
ocean, marrying and trading with Jews of other key port towns. This
panel seeks papers that address this transnational world of early
America Jews. Proposed papers might explore?but are not limited
to?issues such as trade, slavery, race, messianism, mysticism,
everyday life, politics, gender, education, gravestones, the
synagogue, and the arts. We seek a broad disciplinary range and
encourage submissions from literary scholars, archeologists, art
historians, historians, and scholars of religious studies.
Comparative studies of Jews and other colonists are also welcome.

Please send one-page abstract to Laura Leibman, Reed College
(leibman(at)reed(dot)edu) by September 20th, 2010.

Fellowship Program at the Herbert D. Katz Center for Advanced Judaic Studies:

HERBERT D. KATZ CENTER FOR ADVANCED JUDAIC STUDIES
University of Pennsylvania
Post-Doctoral Fellowship 2011-2012
Application Deadline: November 10, 2010

Travel Facts, Travel Fictions, and the Performance of Jewish Identity

The past decades have seen the emergence of an intense interest in the
subject of travel as a complex range of practices and representations.
The inherent richness and diversity of the evidence, texts, and
materials related to Jewish travel make it a perfect venue to engage
scholars from a broad range of disciplines and periods (ancient,
medieval, and modern history, literature, art and film, anthropology,
postcolonial and gender studies) in a critical dialogue.
Travel writing in particular (in its mimetic, imaginative,
and hybrid modes) has served a variety of social and ideological
functions throughout the ages, and unquestionably, travels of
dislocation and return, pilgrimage, trade and conquest, hold a
prominent place in formative Jewish and non-Jewish fictions of
identity. What cultural and ideological work is performed by these
texts, and how do they produce representations of an-Other and his
world, against which and through which they explore and invent a
particular sense of self? This is the problematic that this research
group will explore. While each mode and each period brings its own
questions and dilemmas, there are a number of common questions and
issues cutting across disciplinary lines that proposals could address:

* What are the institutions and conditions that foster
travel, such as new technologies, concepts of leisure, or commercial
networks linking Jewish communities in far-off places? How do these
factors provide social, political, and economic contexts that
influence both travel fact and travel fiction?
* How do travel discourses engage in a critical dialogue with
"hearth and home," supporting or disturbing dominant perceptions of
centers and margins? How do these categories look like when viewed
through a Jewish lens as opposed to a Christian or Muslim one?
* How do the various genres and discourses of travel writing
interact and influence one another? How does the real affect the
imaginary, and vice versa? How do travel literatures themselves
circulate?=20
* How is the journey depicted in visual media such as
photography, sketches, and film? How is travel imagined in postcards
or touristic advertising?
* To what extent does Jewish travel map onto the movement made
possible by the expanding frontiers of empires, both ancient and
modern? How, for example, do Jewish authors interact with European
models of expansion and discovery?
* While relatively few pre-modern travel narratives were
written by women, travel accounts do raise important issues of gender
agency and representation. How does gender influence both what is seen
and how it is interpreted in the various modes of travel writing?

The Katz Center invites applications from scholars in the humanities
and social sciences at all levels, as well as outstanding graduate
students in the final stage of writing their dissertations. Stipend
amounts are based on a fellow's academic standing and financial need
with a maximum of $40,000 for the academic year. The application
deadline is November 10, 2010. Awards will be announced by February 1,
2011.

Applications are available on our website: www.cajs.upenn.edu. For
