Program
School Counselors are increasingly impacting student achievement and development through the implementation of classroom interventions that address students' academic, social/emotional and career competencies. By learning the current standards for evidence-based practice in school counseling and gaining knowledge about interventions that meet those standards, school counselors and other educators can provide powerful benefits to their schools and districts.

Participants in the Leadership Institute learned about:

  1. Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) in School Counseling
  2. Choosing interventions based on EBP
  3. Some school counseling curriculum materials which currently meet EBP standards
  4. Evaluating curriculum materials based on EBP
  5. Demonstrating gains in knowledge and skills due to curriculum interventions using pre- and post-tests and other evaluation methods
  6. Communicating with key stakeholders about successful interventions

Among the interventions presented were:

Faculty

Rich Lapan, Ph.D.
Professor at the University of Missouri-Columbia, editor of Professional School Counseling. Special expertise in program evaluation and career development. Member of the National Panel for Evidence-Based School Counseling Practice.

Greg Brigman, Ph.D.
Profesor at Florida Atlantic University, co-developer of Student Success Skills curriculum. Special expertise in the impact of school counselor-led interventions on student academic and social performance.

Linda Webb, Ph.D.
Assistant Profesor at Florida Atlantic University, co-developer of Student Success Skills curriculum. Special expertise in measuring student outcomes related to counselor intervention.

Jay Carey, Ph.D.
Director, Center for School Counseling Outcome Research and Coordinator of the UMass Amherst School Counseling Program; special expertise in leadership development and school counseling program evaluation. Member of the National Panel for Evidence-Based School Counseling Practice.

Carey Dimmitt, Ph.D.
Associate Director, Center for School Counseling Outcome Research and Assistant Professor of School Counseling at UMass Amherst; special expertise in school counseling curriculum development and interventions affecting academic achievement.
Member of the National Panel for Evidence-Based School Counseling Practice.
