CSCOR Director Named Counselor Educator of the Year
When it comes to Counselor Educator of the Year, this year's
co-winners prove that it's difficult to pick just one. Described
by colleagues as a "tireless advocate of professional school counseling," Jay Carey has done much to promote and educate school counselors. The associate dean of the School of Education at the University of Massachusetts describes him as "a counselor educator who has made significant impact and contributions through his research and scholarly work, his leadership within the school of education and across the United States, as well as his service to school counselors." He is highly valued by colleagues for his thoughtful insights and advice, and praised for his ability to include a variety of stakeholders. In the words of Massachusetts School Counselor president-elect, Carey's contributions are "unmatched."
A recognized leader in his state's school counseling
community, Rich Lapan, counselor Educator of the Year co-winner,
has been instrumental in creating, developing and teaching Missouri's
statewide school counseling initiative. Norm Gyspers, PhD., of
the University of Missouri - Columbia, said Lapan's "clinical skills, his knowledge of comprehensive school guidance programs and his extensive knowledge and skills in evaluation have made him an outstanding instructor and mentor." Lapan has also served as editor of Professional School Counseling journal for the past two years, a job which he describes as "a labor of love." He has been described as an advocate for counselors, children, parents, and teachers - one who never hesitates to assist in any way possible.
