UMass Amherst Chancellor to Step Down
On May 15, in response to President Jack Wilson's announcement of a major management reorganization across the university system, Chancellor John V. Lombardi wrote the following message that was sent to all faculty and staff at UMass Amherst:
As part of the transformation of the UMass system into a strong university with a flagship campus in Amherst, the university will be restructuring its management of the Amherst campus to ensure that the President is directly involved and engaged in the activities of the flagship campus.
In consultation with the President, I have agreed to extend my term as chancellor to facilitate the transition to the new management during the coming academic year, working closely with the president and the trustees as well as with campus constituencies on this agenda. These changes reflect the frequently expressed commitment of the trustees and the president to the continued progress of the Amherst campus within the context of a unified and united University of Massachusetts. We all look forward to the continued improvement of the nationally competitive teaching and research that defines the contribution of the Amherst campus to the University of Massachusetts.
