Nominations Open for Spotlight Scholar Faculty Awards

The fall 2015 call for nominations for the UMass Amherst Spotlight Scholar faculty award program are now open. This award publicly acknowledges the quality, dedication, and achievements of the UMass Amherst faculty.

Linda Greenhouse is Senior Research Scholar in Law, Knight Distinguished Journalist in Residence, Joseph Goldstein Lecturer in Law at Yale Law School, and a Pulitzer Prize winning reporter.

SBS Surpasses Campaign Goal of $28 Million

In April 2013, the UMass Rising campaign to raise $300 million was launched, with SBS being charged to raise $28 million. In May, the UMass Amherst Foundation Board was proud to announce that the University, and SBS, had surpassed those goals a year ahead of schedule. Thanks to the contributions from the alumni community, UMass Rising has become the campus’s most successful fundraising effort in its 152-year history.

Pulitzer Prize-Winning Journalist, David Maraniss, to Speak at UMass

David Maraniss, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and associate editor at The Washington Post, will read from his new book, “Once in a Great City: A Detroit Story,” at the University of Massachusetts Amherst at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 23, in room N301 of the Integrative Learning Center. The UMass Journalism and Communication departments are sponsoring the event, which is free and open to the public.

Senior Wins Dean’s Opportunity Fund Scholarship

“I am so honored to receive the Dean’s Opportunity Fund scholarship,” says Alida Lefebvre ’16 (sociology/WGSS). “Receiving this award makes all the hard work I put into my classes and extracurricular activities worth it. I overload on my credits so I will be able to graduate a year early. This award helps me feel less stressed about the upcoming semester.”

A Partnership to Improve Health and End Hunger

Adam Lyford and Jessica Morris, who graduated in May with majors in resource economics, are spending the summer interning at the North Grafton farm. Lyford is helping the farm with efficient water usage. For Morris, her work has helped her decide future efforts. “I now realize I want to focus my efforts going forward on hunger relief."

Kawar Already Making Waves for UMass

Leila Kawar, who is one of three new faculty joining the Legal Studies program this Fall, already has two noteworthy accomplishments as a member of the Department of Political Science—the publication of her book and an award for her research.
