2006 William M. Bluestein Memorial Scholarship Award

John McLoughlin '07 is a political science major with a minor in Spanish and a concentration in international studies. A native of Fairhaven, MA, he was a high school studen involved with Americorps, traveling in the southern US to work on a variety of community service projects. During his time at UMass Amherst, McLoughlin has participated in student exchange programs at Sonoma State University and in Costa Rica. He is planning a semester in India to study the creation of alternative energy sources. He is part of the Golden Key National Honor Society and been active with the group Students Help Area Reach-out Efforts (SHARE). He completed a summer internship with the Pan American Health Organization, conducting research to help poor countries in the Americas to achieve environmental sustainability.

John’s $2,000 Bluestein award allowed him the freedom to take an unpaid internship in Washington D.C. over the summer and also allowed him to focus on his studies this fall. John plans to attend graduate school to work towards a Masters degree in public policy.
