The College of Social and Behavioral Sciences at UMass Amherst is home to 3,500 undergraduate majors. The curriculum provides a framework for students to gain knowledge about individuals, societies and cultures. It offers exposure to diverse cultural perspectives essential to understanding contemporary society and oneself. Such knowledge about society and its problems prepares students to be intelligent, committed citizens of the world. Both undergraduate and graduate students benefit from an internationally renowned faculty involved in cutting edge teaching and research.

All undergraduate students in Anthropology, Communication, Economics, Journalism,Legal Studies, Political Science, Sociology, and Social Thought and Political Economy, and all B.A. students in Psychology (even though Psychology is became part of the College of Natural Sciences in 2009), are required to satisfy the Global Education Requirement. They may select from four options to complete the requirement. All options require at least 15 credits; all require that at least 6 of the 15 credits be in a foreign language starting at a level above current ability. Students majoring in Landscape Architecture and Regional Planning, which joined SBS in 2009, are exempt from the Global Education Reguirement. Huston named Marshall Scholar
Katie Huston '08 (journalism) is one of 40 students nationwide this year to be awarded a Marshall Scholarship—the first UMass Amherst student in thirty years to receive one. The Marshall Scholarship funds two or three years of graduate study at any British university. Created by British Parliament in honor of General George C. Marshall as an enduring gesture of thanks from the people of Britain for U.S. assistance received after World War II, it is one of the most competitive and prestigious merit scholarships available to graduating American seniors.
