The University of Massachusetts Athletic
Department's mission is to provide the University and the Commonwealth
with an athletic program that reflects the University's educational
goals and objectives. The University mission statement includes
a commitment to participate in Division I intercollegiate sports.
It is the Athletic Department's responsibility to ensure that athletic
programs are of the highest caliber and are indicative of the University's
desire to be in the top echelon of American universities.
The University of Massachusetts charter
established a clear commitment to the development and improvement
of the quality of life in the Commonwealth. The Athletic Department
is committed to multicultural awareness and diversity. The Department's
role in fulfilling this goal is to continually strive to be inclusive
in all of its endeavors; and to be a leader on the campus and in
the community in pursuit of racial, gender and social equality.
The Athletic Department is committed
to excellence in academics and athletics. The department will focus
on fielding competitive teams at the highest levels of intercollegiate
competition, while providing a total education for the student-athletes
who participate in its programs. The University strives to reach
the highest possible graduation rate for all of its student-athletes,
while focusing on their social, cultural, intellectual and moral
development. The commitment to academics and athletics is manifested
by the Athletic Department's belief that athletic competition teaches
the participants physical and mental skills valuable in our society.
