Executive Summary: Students spend, on average, three hours per week in the Campus Center/Student Union complex. People's Market was rated highest in food quality compared to the other 4 food outlets in the complex. Over fifty- percent of the students surveyed said they socialize in the Campus Center/Student Union complex a few times per week, one-quarter of the students said they study in the complex a few times per week, and six-percent said they go to conference and meeting rooms in the complex a few times per week. The two things students said they would most like to see in a new complex are more PC labs, and Academic Advising facilities.
On Tuesday, February 19th, 1997, Project Pulse conducted a survey for the New Student Union Coalition. The survey investigated students' attitudes about the facilities and services in the current student union and solicited suggestions for future renovations to the current facility. Projd been selected randomly by computer from the University's student database. Pulse interviewers successfully contacted 571 of these students and 474 (83%) agreed to participate in the survey. The response rate for the survey was 48%. Table 1 shows the final disposition of the calling listect Pulse interviewers attempted to contact 1189 undergraduate students who ha and Table 2 shows selected demographics of the respondents.

First, students were asked how much time they spend per week in the Campus Center/Student Union complex. Twelve-percent (n=55) of the respondents said they do not spend any time in the complex. Those who do spend time in the complex spend, on average, three hours per week in the Campus Center/Student Union. Thirty-five percent (n=167) belong to at least one registered student organization (RSO) and forty-one (n=67) percent of these students said that the RSO they spend the most time with has office space in the Campus Center/Student Union complex.
Students also were asked how often they eat in the various food outlets (Hatch, Blue Wall, Coffee shop, Earthfoods, People's Market) in the complex and then were asked to rate the quality of the food in each outlet using a 5-point scale where 5 is outstanding and 1 is terrible. Figure 1 displays the frequency with which students eat in each of the five food outlets. Table 3 shows the quality ratings for each of the five food outlets.

In the next battery of questions students were asked about the frequency with which they engage in four types of activities in the Campus Center/Student Union complex. Figure 2 displays the percentage of students who participate in each of the four different activities at least "a few times per semester." Table 4 shows the quality ratings for the complex as a place to participate in each of the four activities (studying, socializing, going to conferences or meeting rooms, and buying things).

Finally, students were questioned about they types of things they would like to see in a new or renovated Campus Center/Student Union complex. They were asked to rate each of 16 items using a scale ranging from 1 to 5, with 1 being something they want less and 5 being something they want more. See Table 5 for the results from this battery of questions.
