Executive Summary: Almost three-quarters of the students surveyed reported that they have a friend or relative who is gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgendered. More than four-fifths said they think anti-gay, anti-lesbian, anti-bisexual, and anti-transgender attitudes exist on campus at least to "some extent." Slightly more than half of the respondents said they know people at UMass who make anti-gay, anti-lesbian, anti-bisexual or anti-transgender remarks. Two-fifths of men and one-quarter of women reported that they would "do nothing" if they witnessed an incident of GLBT-related harassment on campus. Two-fifths of the students said they know where Stonewall Center is located, and one quarter know where the LBG Alliance is located, but fewer than one-tenth know the difference between these two offices. Nearly one-fifth of the respondents reported having attended at least one event sponsored by either Stonewall Center or the LGBA. Women students were nearly twice as likely as men to report being "very" or "somewhat" interested in learning about GLBT concerns, history and culture. Seniors were more likely than first-year students to report having learned "a great deal" about GLBT people since coming to UMass.
On Tuesday February 26, 1997, Project Pulse conducted a survey on gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) issues for the Office of Human Relations in conjunction with the Stonewall Center. The Office of Human Relations has commissioned a survey pertaining to sexual orientation issues every three years since 1985 in order to collect data which are utilized to monitor campus climate. The 1985 and 1988 surveys pertained only to gay and lesbian issues, while the 1991 and 1993 surveys addressed gay, lesbian and bisexual (GLB) issues. This year, at the request of the Stonewall Center, the scope of the survey was expanded to include transgender issues as well. Thus, the current version of the survey utilizes the term "GLBT" throughout as an abbreviation for "gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender." These changes in the survey's language need to be taken into consideration when attempting to compare survey results over time.
Project Pulse interviewers attempted to contact 1,165 undergraduates who had been selected randomly by computer from the University's student database. Pulse interviewers successfully contacted 482 of these students and 372 (77%) agreed to participate in the survey. The response rate for the survey was 38%. Table 1 shows the final disposition of the calling list and Table 2 displays the demographics of the survey respondents.

Initially, respondents were provided with the following definition of the term transgender: "People who do not conform to conventional gender roles." (This definition was obtained from Stonewall Center.) Ninety-five percent (n=364) of the respondents reported having met someone who is gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgendered, while almost three-quarters (71.2%, n=274) reported that they have a friend or relative who is gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgendered. Female students were more likely than male students to report having a friend or relative who is GLBT (79.4% vs. 64.2%, p = .001). When asked, "To what extent do you think anti-GLBT attitudes exist on the UMass campus?" 84% (n=318) said they believe such attitudes exist at least "to some extent." Fifty-five percent (n=214) of those surveyed said they know people here at UMass who make anti-gay, anti-lesbian, anti-bisexual or anti-transgender remarks.
Students were asked to indicate how often they hear or see course instructors, University staff members, or other students "stereotyping, making negative remarks, or telling jokes that 'put down' gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender people." Results are presented in Table 3. When asked how often they see "anti-GLBT graffiti in residence halls or in other campus buildings," 7% said either "often" or "very often."

Students were asked, "If you witnessed one or more students making derogatory remarks about or otherwise verbally harassing a student because they assumed he or she was gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender what would you do first?" Responses to this question, broken down by sex, are presented in Figure 1. Three-quarters (75.6%, n=292) of those surveyed reported being aware that "harassment on the basis of sexual orientation directed at gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender people is prohibited by the Code of Student Conduct."
Next, students were asked about their knowledge of issues pertaining to gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender cultures and experiences. Forty percent (n=153) of the students said that they know where the Stonewall Center is, while approximately one-quarter (26.5%, n=103) said they know where the Lesbian, Bisexual, Gay Alliance is located. Only eight percent (n=29) said they know the difference between these two offices. Nearly one-fifth (18.3%, n=71) of the students surveyed reported having attended at least one of the following activities sponsored by either the Stonewall Center or the Lesbian, Bisexual, Gay Alliance: Lecture or talk (9.3%, n=36); Concert, Play or Cafe (7.0%, n=27); Dance (4.9%, n=19); Speakers Bureau (7.8%, n=30); and Information Social or LBGA Meeting (3.6%, n=14).
Women students were nearly twice as likely as men to report being "very" or "somewhat" interested in learning about GLBT concerns, history and culture (62.8% vs. 35.3%, p = .0000). Women also were more likely than men to report having discussed GLBT issues with their friends outside of class (68.3% vs. 46.8%, p = .00002). Students were asked, "How much have you learned about GLBT people since coming to UMass?" Response categories were "a great deal," "some," and "not much." Figure 2 illustrates the proportion of students saying "a great deal" broken down by class year.
Finally, students were asked to indicate their level of agreement or disagreement with six attitudinal statements pertaining to GLBT issues. Table 4 shows students' responses to these questions broken down by sex.

Gay, Lesbian and Bisexual Issues Survey (S97-C)
Hello, is this _____________? My name is ____________. I'm calling you tonight
for Project Pulse of the Student Affairs Research Office at UMass. Tonight we are
conducting a survey for the Office of Human Relations which monitors campus
climate regarding gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender issues. You have been
randomly selected from the entire undergraduate population to participate in
tonight's survey. I would like to ask you some questions which should take only
about seven minutes. All of your responses are completely confidential. Feel
free to ask questions at any time.
Please note that throughout this survey, I will be using the term "GLBT" as
an abbreviation for "gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender." In this survey,
the term "transgender" is used to describe people who do not conform
to conventional gender roles.
