The Department of Sociology and SADRI will present a colloquium series featuring department faculty and graduate students and invited guests during academic year 2011-12. These events are held in the Rossi Conference Room, W32 Machmer Hall, unless otherwise noted. These are the earliest events, with many more to come!

  • September 20: Ayse Yetis-Bayraktar. Practice job talk. "Differences in Time Spent on Childhood Activities by Parents' Class." How does children's television and homework habits differ by parents' class? 12:45-2:00 p.m.
  • September 27: Dan Burland. Practice job talk: "The Quartermaster Museum: Commemorating the Unexceptional." How are support soldiers assigned military honor?  An analysis of the Quartermaster Museum, an institution whose sole purpose is to honor 
    those soldiers who perform mundane service tasks in the U.S. Army. 12:45-2:00 p.m.
  • October 14: Shawn Trivette. Practice job talk: "Go Big or Get Out: Power, Trust, and Reciprocity in Locally-Based Farm and Vendor Relationships." What are the challenges and constraints around developing a vibrant locally-based food system?  This is an analysis of farm and vendor participants in one region's local food system, the obstacles
    they face, and the ways they overcome those obstacles. 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.
  • February 2: Panel discussion. “NIH Funding for the Social Sciences: A Panel by and for Social Science Faculty from across Campus.” 3:30-5:00 p.m.
