A professor in the Department of Sociology and a UMass Distinguished Professor, Naomi Gerstel has published articles on the gender gap in kinwork, factors shaping men’s caregiving, the work of maintaining sibling ties, the class, race and gender privileges embedded in FMLA and child care, and labor unions’ family policies. Her ongoing research consists of two projects: 1) research on carework, focusing on variation by race/ethnicity in the gender gap, and 2) a study of the politics of time, focusing on paid work and families. She, along with Dan Clawson, has been selected to be a resident fellow at the Russell Sage Foundation for their project "Inequality in Work Hours and Schedules" during 2011-12.
