Lynnette Leidy Sievert is a professor in the Department of Anthropology. As a biological anthropologist, she studies menopause as an aspect of human variation. She is interested in explaining variation in age at menopause and variation in symptom experience at midlife across cultures. She has interviewed women about their menopausal experiences in upstate New York; western Massachusetts; Puebla, Mexico; the Selska Valley, Slovenia; Asuncion, Paraguay; Hilo, Hawaii; and Sylhet, Bangladesh. She is the author or co-author of over forty journal articles having to do with women's health, and author of the book Menopause: A Biocultural Perspective (2006). As a biological anthropologist, she is also interested in explaining the evolution of menopause and post-reproductive life as a by-product of other adaptations. In 2010 she was been elected a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in recognition of her scientifically and socially distinguished efforts to advance science or its applications, and was honored for “distinguished contributions to the biocultural study of women’s health, particularly for enhancing understanding of menopause and its relation to broader aspects of women’s lives.”
