Amy Schalet is an assistant professor in the Department of Sociology and a specialist on adolescent sexuality and culture in comparative perspective. Her book, Not Under My Roof: Parents, Teens, and the Culture of Sex (University of Chicago, November 2011), examines the regulation of adolescent sexuality in American and Dutch families. Probing our childrearing for what it tells us about our culture, Not Under My Roof offers an unprecedented comparative analysis of sexuality and selfhood.  Schalet has worked closely with physicians and others on new approaches to sexual health promotion for adolescents.  She has served on the boards of national and local health organizations, consulted with community groups and the media, and collaborated on clinical and educational materials.  Schalet has delivered plenary addresses and trainings at the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Society for Adolescent Health and Medicine, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, the Michigan Departments of Public Health and Education, and the STD-prevention branch of the Centers for Disease Control, among many others.  She has also written opinion pieces for the New York Times and the Washington Post.  She has been awarded multiple dissemination grants by the Ford Foundation.  Her most recent grant, "Advancing Sexuality Education, Health and Policy Using a New ABCD for Adolescent Sexuality," expands her previous work with physicians to educators, administrators, and school-based nurses.  Schalet co-founded the Public Engagement Project at UMass-Amherst, which helps researchers disseminate their work outside the Academy, hosts speakers, runs workshops, and holds panels that address a range of skills and situations that academics face in working with the media, policymakers, social movements and practitioners.  She holds a bachelor’s degree from Harvard and a doctorate from the University of California, Berkeley.
