The Social and Demographic Research Institute (SADRI) has served as the research arm of the Department of Sociology and affiliated researchers at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst for over three decades. With increasingly interdisciplinary research collaborations, SADRI has become a more diverse and far-reaching enterprise in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences over recent years.

During his long tenure as SADRI Director, Peter Rossi shaped the Institute into a broad confederation of applied social science research. The Institute still retains this basic principle of supporting a wide variety of faculty research interests and of facilitating broad-reaching interdisciplinary collaborations to address significant social problems.

Although SADRI is not limited by a topical research agenda, strong faculty interests over the past several decades have developed a reputation for SADRI's excellence in research areas, including:

     ● Population, Lifecourse and Health Studies
     ● Work, Welfare and Family Research
     ● Inequality and Policy Evaluation
     ● Cultural and Organizational Studies

Above all, the mission of SADRI remains that of facilitating applied and empirical social research interests of faculty at the University of Massachusetts. By taking guidance from the interests of our research faculty and supporting their efforts, the Institute draws its dynamic strengths and directions from the evolving enterprise of contemporary social research.

This website is, of course, only an introduction to the faculty and activities underway at SADRI, but we hope you take time to explore the site and the information it offers on the activities, people and opportunities that are, in combination, the Social and Demographic Research Institute.
