Our Constitution

WISM

Women in Sport Management (WISM) was formed in 1990 in order to help women in the department, as well as other departments and programs locally, acquire the skills, knowledge, networks, and confidence necessary to establish themselves in what is currently an overwhelmingly male-dominated industry. WISM is available to faculty, graduate students and for men and women inside the Five-College Community. Through educational and social events, guest speakers, conferences and promotional events, the goal of WISM members is to gain practical knowledge while advancing the role of women in Sport Management.

Unfortunately, at the undergraduate level, women account for only 17.5% of the Sport Management majors at UMASS. Males also outnumber and out earn females in management positions in the sport industry. To reverse this trend, WISM has decided to under take proactive strategies to recruit women to the major, build their confidence, develop their potential, and provide a solid network of professional women in sport.

In addition to our career panel event held annually in the spring, WISM also promotes themselves in the UMass community and as a member of the Isenberg School of Management by participating in open houses. WISM, on occasion, hosts guest speakers and social activities in the Amherst community.

Membership

Active WISM members are defined as regularly attending meetings and participating in a least one WISM even each semester. Currently there are no member dues. Elections for offices: President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer, and also the class representatives are held in May.

Goals

Goals for the 2002-2003 academic year include: more recruitment within the five colleges, fundraisers, and an increase in social activities for the members. In the spring of 2003, WISM hopes to organize an intramural sport team, and to continue our annual career panel.
