About Testing

  • A belt test is a ceremony of personal progress. Your judges are not really testing you, you are testing yourself.
  • During a belt test, focus 100% of your energy (ki) on everything that you do
  • A belt test is a formal occasion. Take extra care to observe dojang etiquette.
  • Make sure to reply to all directions with a loud and strong "Yes Ma'am!" or "Yes Sir!".
  • You are being tested on the strength of your spirit and character just as much as (if not more than) your physical strength and the quality of your technique. Make sure to give everything on your test your absolute best try. The way in which you attempt something is often more important than how well you execute a technique.
  • It is possible to fail a belt test. If you do fail, do not be discouraged. Your team is here to support you and help you prepare to retest! Often the senior belts may provide an opportunity for you to retest just a particular area that needed further development.
  • Nobody will EVER think poorly of you for your performance on a test as long as you approach the test with honor and proper martial spirit.
