The Balanced Man

Our fraternity is based on the idea of the balanced man. To be a balanced man, one must strive to balance all of life's responsibilities. Life can be chaotic for the college student, especially as a freshman, where there are no parents or relatives guiding you through your priorities.A balanced man is a well-rounded individual who can properly balance all of his obligations to himself, and his University. The ideal of the balanced man is only fully obtained through a concerted effort being put forth in a number of different areas such as: classroom academics, athletics, clubs or social groups, student government, etc. Here at the University of Massachusetts , members of our fraternity are currently involved in many of these activities, and have found that they can succeed in all of them if a serious commitment to excellence is made.Based on our cardinal principles of Virtue, Diligence and Brotherly Love , the Balanced Man Program is a four-year membership development program. The Balanced Man Program was implemented in the national fraternity in 1996, and here at Mass Alpha in 1999. The BMP has continued to thrive because of its focus on individual and chapter development. In particular, the BMP focuses on mentoring, campus and community involvement, and the ritual of SigEp. The BMP's main focus is in the development of a sound mind and a sound body

Specifically, our member development focuses on generating brothers into stronger athletes, scholars, leaders, and gentlemen. New brothers of Sigma Phi Epsilon are NOT hazed . Rather than enduring traditional hazing rituals, SigEp gives its members challenges they will face in the real world.  Once brothers officially accept their bids to SigEp and placed through a ritual shortly after, they become full brothers of Sigma Phi Epsilon. Once this occurs, new members are personally treated no differently than any other brother in the fraternity. With the help of the brotherhood, and the principles of the balanced man, Sigma Phi Epsilon has endured to be the largest and most successful fraternity both here at Massachusetts Alpha, and nationwide.
