General Information:

Started informally in spring 1995 by two undergraduate students, the club was granted Registered Student Association status in the fall of 1995. In the spring of 1996 the club began racing in New England Interscholastic Sailing Association regattas.  Boats competed in included 420's, FJ's, and J-22's.

This club was established to allow the university communitiy the opportunity to sail competitively in college.  All students are encoursged to sail with us but we are not necessarily a "learn to sail" organization partly because of or lack of resources.  Collegiate Sailing is a extremely competitive entity and we can not put non sailors on the water without practice for safety reasons.  We sail dinghy's, 420's, FJ's and Larks (double-handed boats).  Opportunities to sail single handed (Lasers) and triple-handed, (J-22's) arise and can be sailed when interest is shown.

Regattas:

Attendees of regattas, usually four persons plus one alternate,  are required to attend a meeting the week before to arrange time to practice (at least twice), gather gear, (lifejackets, bailers and foul weather gear), and arrange transportation and housing if necessary.  We do provide gas money but you are required to pay for food and any other costs incured on your own.  . The club is penalized by any member not attending a regatta for any reason other than medical emergency.  You must take the responsibility to plan ahead.  We will not tolerate unpreparedness.

Location:
Practice and boat usage is held at Lake Arcadia.  To get to the Lake, take Route 9 East towards Amherst College and into Belchertown.  Take a right onto "Federal" Street.  Continue until you reach a fork, in which you take "Town Beach" Road on your left.  There will be a shed and town beach from which our boats are sailed.

Membership:

We will be sending out a newsletter twice per semester and possibly one over summer and winter sessions to keep you up to date and informed.  . We will hold weekly or bi-weekly meetings depending on circumstances in order to catch up on business, address issues, delegate responsibities and organize regatta crews and schedules.  Meetings are very important to our growth but are worthless when people do not attend.  Volunteers and encouraged to help promote us locally and nationally.  You should contact the Captain Greg at 259-0032 or at koman@student.umass.edu when you know with what you can help us.

Non Sailors and Instructors Alike:

We would like to have a learn to sail outing for the non-sailing community but will need enthusiasm and encouragement to put it together.  It would be taught by US Sailing certified instructors and would be at a reasonable cost.  Those interested and/or volunteers should call Greg at 259-0032.

Office Hours:

Will be by appointment only.  You can stop by  the office usually we are all hanging out but we will keep business by appointments.  We are all busy with school work and jobs so it is difficult to keep lengthy office hours to accomadate everyone. The office phone number is 545-1721, if we are not there leave a message and we will return your call
