Past Meetings

Here you'll find the dates of past meetings as well as a little summary of each meeting.

 

Sept 16 - Welcome to the club everyone! Dr. Purdy gave a short talk on being in the Preveterinary & Animal Science Program student at UMASS.

 

Sept 23 - Dr. Howe gave a lecture about alternative medicine in the medical and veterinary field. He went on to talk aobut the effects of different medicines, cancer treatments, acupuncture, and chiropractics with horses.

 

Oct 2 - Prof. Corcoran from the University of Edinburgh in Scotland gave a talk about Vet schools in Scotland and the UK.

 

Oct 7 - We went to the Hadley Farm and Dr. Purdy supervised a necropsy on a couple of lambs.

 

Oct 14 - We met at Al Richmond's classroom, where he gave a lecture on various reptiles and then displayed some of his incredible collection.

 

Oct 23 - A representative of Tufts University came to talk about their Veterinary Program.

 

Oct 28 - Jeanne DiPretoro came to talk about Ross University and some of the pos and cons of goint to a vet school in the Carribean

 

Nov 6 - We met at Kate Doyle's classroom where she performed a necropsy on a holstein calf that died at birth. She showed us how to measure the specimens and how to collect data on them.

 

Nov 11 - The first of two sets of mock interviews were performed with current vet school applicants coming before a panel of various faculty members. Campus was closed so the interviews were given in the Paige Reading Room.

 

Nov 18 - The second set of mock interviews were given back in Stockbridge.

 

Dec 2 - For the final meeting of the semester, we returned to Kate Doyle's classroom where she performed a necropsy on a gray fox that did not have a good day by the road. We were lucky enough to have a second necropsy on a fisher cat (not a real cat) in which Kate showed some interesting espects of the animal, such as how the animal protects itself from porcupine quills and their scent glands which are very similar to those found on a skunk!
