How much committment does the club need from people helping with instruction? Here's a rough idea of what we want from leaders and assistants
each semester:
- Help teach wet exits 1-on-1, to 12 different students
- Help teach rolling 1-on-1 for 15 minutes, each, to 10 students
- Instruct or assist with leading at least 8 students on river trips.
- Make time regularly to go paddling with lesser experienced paddlers from the group. Look out for them and share with them what you know.
The above can be done each semester, in perhaps 3-6 pool
sessions and 2-4 river trips? It's a part of paddling fun. If you don't think so you should try it!
Leaders vs. Assistants
What's the difference between leaders and assistants? Leaders are paddlers who are ACA certified to a level where they can be made the
designated person in charge of running a UMOC paddling trip and responsible for managing all aspects of safety, instruction and liability.
Assistants are paddlers who may or may not have some level of ACA certification but not enough practice and experience yet to be the
designated person in charge. Whether you're a leader or assistant, you play an equally essential role in our work (and fun) of teaching
people to whitewater kayak!
