An Introduction to the NSA

Our Purpose

As the official Catholic Student Organization on the UMASS-Amherst campus, we strive to further Christian beleifs and provide the services and activities which will benefit the student population and the local community. The NSA organizes and sponsors activities in the Service, Spiritual and Social program areas.

Our Members

Membership in the Newman Student Association is open to all members of the UMASS community, regardless of religion, race, ethnicity, sex, etc. Our membership consists primarily of undergraduate and graduate students, although the graduate community at Newman does maintain its own student organization. Anyone interested in becoming a member should email our secretary, fill out the on-line Registration Form or stop by the NSA office, located in the main corridor of the Newman Center.

Our History

The Newman Center at the University of Massachusetts was erected almost thirty-six years ago in 1960. But even before that time there existed a campus ministry at UMASS, and with it, a Newman Club. Originally, the club met in the garage of St. Brigid's Church, just down the street (or so the rumor goes), and so has a long running tradition.

Today, now called the Newman Student Association, the club is an organization of almost one hundred students (in the late 60's it had reached numbers of 300+).
