Constitution

 

Article I.  Name

Section 1                The name of the organization shall be the Mutant Union.

 

Article II. Objective

Section 1                To create a healthy, informative and supportive social environment for those of the student body who do not fit in, agree with or feel welcome in their social surroundings for any reasons.

Section 2                To celebrate and develop individuality and acceptance of others within the student body.

Section 3                To promote and create entertaining and or educational events and activities which display and promote diversity and free thought on campus, alone and in alliance with other RSOs.

 

Article III. Membership

Section 1                Membership in MAMO shall be open to all persons of the five college community and their dependents, staff, faculty and alumni.  Membership shall last for the entire academic year in which the member has registered  as well as the first three weeks of the on coming academic year.

                For example a student registering for ‘97-’98 membership will be a registered member for that  entire academic year and the membership will become void and need to be renewed after the third week of the ‘98-’99 academic year.

 

Section 2                Membership Shall be of two types:

                 a. Regular- Voting membership is open to all undergraduate students of the University of Massachusetts.

                b. Associate- Non-voting membership is open to all other persons of the five college community and their dependents, staff, faculty and alumni.

Section 3                All regular members shall have attended a minimum of two (2) meetings to be eligible to vote.

Section 4                No person, having qualified for membership as described in article III Sections 1 and 2 of the Constitution of MU shall be denied the rights and privileges of MU membership on the basis of age, marital status, physical ability, class, national origin, political affiliation, race, religion, sex or sexual orientation.

 

Article IV. Governance

Section 1                The governing body of MU is composed of a President, a Vice President,  a Treasurer and a Secretary.

                a. President- shall be responsible for holding meetings,  keeping the organization active, and supporting the other officers.  The President shall hold signature authority.

                b. Vice President- shall be responsible for holding elections, managing advertising and public relations as well as organizing voting at the meetings.

                c. Treasurer- shall be responsible for  recording the finances of MU (including, but not limited to, account transactions, and financial actions voted on during meetings).  The Treasurer shall hold signature authority.

                d. Secretary- shall be responsible for recording the minutes of each meeting and keeping track of membership information.

Section 2                All officers shall be regular members of MU as defined in article III, section 2A of this Constitution.

Section 3                All officers shall be elected no less than two weeks before the end of the academic year and shall serve for a period of one (1) academic year, at the end of which said officer may, if he or she wishes, run for the same or a different position.

Section 4                Officers must be elected by a 50%+1 (or 51%) majority vote of the regular membership in attendance at a regularly scheduled meeting.

Article V. Referenda

Section 1.                 All referenda, if approved, shall become an act of MU.

Section 2. All referenda are to be clearly labeled and understood by the voting members of MU.

Section 3. A referendum shall be initiated by any one of the following:

                a. Any of the officers of MU

                b. The signatures, on a petition, of not less than five percent(5%) of the MU membership.

Article VI. Amendments

Section 1                Any amendment to this Constitution shall be passed upon a 50%+1(or 51%) majority vote of the MU regular Membership voting on the amendment through an Action Referendum.

Section 2                Said amendments shall be submitted to the Student Government Association for the approval of the Secretary of Registry.      

        

Article VII. Ratification

Section 1                This Constitution shall be ratified upon a unanimous vote of the MU officers in attendance at a scheduled meeting, by a majority vote of the voting MU membership and by the approval of the Secretary of the Registry of the Student Government Organization of UMASS.

Section 2                A copy of this Constitution shall be made available to all members of MU.
