Director's Note

Seven months ago I began a project called The Wiz. At that point in time it was all just a vision and a dream. Today, what you are about to see is that very same vision and dream of mine brought to life.

Over forty beautiful faces are going to fill the stage and entertain you for the next two hours. These same people are the ones who have given their blood, sweat, and t ears to me in rehearsal everyday for the past three months. In collaboration with the choreographer, vocal director, and myself, these performers are about to present to you the UMass Theatre Guild's fall production of The Wiz.

The Wiz deals with many issues of self discovery. Dorothy's journey through Oz can basically be interpreted as a journey within herself. With the assistance of the Scarecrow, Tinman, Lion and many other Ozian figures, Dorothy finds her way home, not only to the Bronx, but to the home in her heart. The three words of wisdom given to Dorothy are the same words I am handing to you, the audience "Believe in Yourself." And if you do believe in yourself, anything is possible. This production and all that has gone into it, i s living proof for everyone to see.

Our main goal here at the UMass Theatre Guild is to have fun while striving for a professional theaterical experience, and The Wiz is no exception. An artistic team of over twenty people have dedicated their semester to t he show and for that, I thank them and congratulate them on a job well done.

And last, I thank you, the audience, for attending the show and I truly hope that you enjoy it. So please sit back, relax, and "stick with us and we'll show you how to smile.
