Director's Note

"Dont be so old fashioned, darling. These are the Naughts."

Despite always being told it's poor form to open with a quote, I can't think of anything more appropriate. Welcome to the Naughts. They're back. The twenty-first century is still a baby, and we have yet to meet the new century's heroes. Picasso At The Lapin Agile presents a fictional meeting between two of the last century's great innovators: Albert Einstein and Pablo Picasso. The play takes place in 1904, before their career-making successes, "The Special Theory of Relativity" and "Les Demoiselles d'Avignon."

Perhaps, these are not the geniuses you were expecting. Truth be told, Einstein and Picasso weren't always the greatest guys. the former lacked social graces, and the latter was a serial womanizer. These are the men we'll be seeing today. Steve Martin has taken the common perception of cultural icons, put it in a blender, and garnished it with cherries and paper umbrellas. Merci beaucoup, Steve.
