This message is from Bo:
A few weeks ago, a close friend died rather suddenly only a couple hours after playing hockey with him. There were no indicators of illness up to that point and on that night. He was a loving father and husband to his wife and 2 year old daughter. At the funeral service, his widow pleaded with people to get regular doctor checkups so such a tragedy can be easily avoided. We are running this benefit to raise money for his family and a portion will be donated to charity. As part of the tournament, we will be interviewing participants about their lifestyle and educating them about the risks at their respective age. We are in touch with the Men’s Health Network, a non-profit out of D.C. and working with them on affiliation. We will also be raising funds through an auction, raffle, and sponsors.
Here are a few “did you knows” from Spike TV’s “Check Up or Check Out” campaign
“A recent poll indicates men have more trouble than women discussing health concerns with their doctors. … Women make 150,000,000 more visits to the doctor each year than men. … 1 in 6 guys wouldn't go to a doctor if they were experiencing chest pain or discomfort.”
My big audacious goal would be to establish a non-profit with a mission to go to the many “weekend warrior” groups and spread the word about men’s health issues, even to the point of helping them arrange a doctor appointment. I would also like to arrange other benefits including this tournament as well as a poker and comedy benefit in the works to raise funds on behalf of groups like Dana Farber of the American Heart Assoc. that deal with such men’s health issues. If you happen to have experience with setting up such an entity and would like to help, please let me know.
I am organizing a benefit hockey tournament in July. I need someone to perform marketing efforts, some fun and basic, others strategic. This could be another item to add to your resume and a reference as well. I have pasted a rough outline of responsibilities for the position. This shouldn’t demand too much of your time, and it could get you an in at places that may help your job search (if you don’t already have one). We have a meeting this Thursday in Newton from 7-9pm, so please let me know hopefully by then if you are interested.
Thanks,
Bo
