UMass Club Baseball Has Successful Inaugural Day – Start Season Off With Two Wins

It was a day long awaited for: The 1st games in the history of the University of Massachusetts Club Baseball Team. Lots of hard work on and off the field came to fruition as UMass defeated SUNY Albany 14-3 and 17-4 Saturday afternoon.

Freshman Pitcher Dan Lambrecht took the ball for the opening game of the club’s first season. Striking out four in three innings, Lambrecht worked through early season rust to earn the first Win in club history, also going 2 for 2 with a two run triple at the plate. After a scoreless first inning, first baseman Matt Hillman (freshman) led off the second with a single, but was thrown out at second as a result of an uncalled interference ruling. Shortstop James Greenwood (junior) followed with a single, and scored on a Paul Haines-Lapenta (freshman) base hit. The Minutemen went out to plate three more that inning, highlighted by a Ryan Gregson (junior) RBI single. SUNY Albany responded with two runs in the bottom of the second inning making it a 4-2 game. The third inning saw an explosion at the plate by UMass, scoring seven runs on six hits, lifted by Lambrecht’s triple and an RBI double by catcher Misael Ramos (junior). Luke Lysak (sophomore) and Hillman also added RBI singles. After an RBI single by Montanaro in the bottom of the 3rd for Albany, the Minutemen went on the put the game away, scoring three runs to make the score 14-3. Freshman Pitcher Erick Parent came in to get the final three outs of the 10-run mercy rule shortened game, clinching the win for UMass. Matt Hillman finished 3 for 3, with a hit by pitch and 2 RBI, while Albert Couillard (freshman) went 1 for 1 with 2 walks and 3 runs scored as the Minutemen pounded out 14 hits.

UMass just kept on scoring in the second game of the double header, this time with discipline at the plate, taking advantage of SUNY Albany pitcher Kaufmann’s wildness. The Minutemen started quickly, scoring six runs in the 1st inning, pushed by outfielder Ryan Davenport’s (sophomore) RBI single. UMass kept it going with two more in the 2nd, but was quickly responded to with four runs from Albany making it 8-4 after two innings. That would be all Albany would get as Senior Pitcher Chris Nowlin struck out three batters on his way to a two hit, no earned run, complete game. Nowlin struggled with his control in the second, hitting three batters after an error by the shortstop, but quickly recovered, retiring ten straight SUNY Albany hitters to finish the game.

UMass would go on to score nine more runs in the 4th and 5th innings combined, highlighted by an RBI double by sophomore 3B Chris Robinson. Designated Hitter Ryan Gregson finished 1 for 1 with 3 of UMass’ 15 walks drawn and 4 runs scored, while Robinson drove in 3 runs.
