Animal Rights Coalition Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Animal Rights Coalition?
The ARC is a group of UMass students dedicated to ending animal suffering in all areas of society( i.e. fashion, food, entertainment, and research), through education of the members of the UMass campus and surrounding areas.

Who are it's members?
The ARC has a diverse membership. Members views on animal rights vary. Some are vegetarian or vegan and some are not. The group actively supports lifestyle changes that eliminate animal suffering, but by no means is being vegetarian or vegan a requirement for being part of the group. The ARC welcomes anyone who loves animals. Being part of the ARC is a great opportunity to make lasting friendships with others who share similar views.

What did the ARC do last year?
We had a very active year! We went to many protests and rallies including several circus protests, a hunting protest, and a greyhound vigil. Also we had several animal rights speakers come and address the group, all of which were very informative, and one of which was Toni Vernelli and representative of PETA. Several members went to an activist training session at Harvard that was sponsored by NEAVS, and was very helpful. One of the highlights of last year was a candle light vigil held on UMass campus for World Week for Animals in Laboratories, which was very successful and many other five college students came to support us. Aside from protests and the like we had two pot- luck dinners and members houses which were great!

What does the ARC plan to do next semester?
One of the main thing that we are planning to do besides the usual protests in we want to have a benefit concert for the ARC and Food Not Bombs. Several hardcore bands should be playing, and it should be really cool, but it's also a lot of work so we need everyones help! In addition we want to have a big guest speaker. Another exciting thing is the Five College Animal Rights Coalition that has sort of been formed this semester, we are planning protests and pot- lucks among other things with other Five College schools, so thats a wonderful opportunity to meet other activists from the area.
