Q) What is "rush"?
A) Rush is a certain period of time before, usually during the beginning of a semester, where students that are not currently affiliated with a fraternity to meet and get to know the different fraternities and the brothers who comprise them.
Q) What happens during rush?
A) There are usually events hosted by each fraternity where the brothers are available to entertain and answer questions for interested students. If the fraternity feels that they would like a certain student to belong to their brotherhood, an oral bid is usually given out sometime during the week.
Q) What is an oral bid?
A) An oral bid is a verbal offer from a brother to a non-brother that the fraternity would like the student to become a "pledge" of their fraternity..
Q) So if I receive an oral bid does that make me a pledge?
A) Not yet, if the student receiving the oral bid chooses to join that fraternity, then that student is invited back to sign an official written bid in front of the President of the fraternity.
Q) So after I sign the written bid I'm a pledge?
A) Yes, this is correct.
Q) What exactly is a pledge?
A) A pledge is simply a word used to describe a brother who wishes to belong to the fraternity but is not yet a brother.
Q) People tell me that pledges get "hazed," what does that mean?
A) Hazing means subjected a person to perform acts against their will that they would otherwise not normally do.
Q) Does your fraternity haze?
A) No we do not.
Q) So what happens during pledging?
A) During the pledge program the pledges learn about the fraternity's history, get to know the brothers who comprise the brotherhood, and form strong bonds with their fellow pledges.
Q) How long does pledging last?
A) Pledging only lasts a few weeks.
