Amsterdam: Support Mobiele Eenheid at the city council

This is a call out for everyone who supports the Mobiele Eenheid to come and show up at the meeting of the city council on Thursday 6 December, 13:30 @ Stopera!
Those of you who have been following our news know that the judge ordered us to leave our current location on 1st of February. We believe that this will lead to unnecessary emptiness. The owner will definitely not begin the construction of his (unwanted) hotel by then, and is most probably waiting to see what the future of the neighborhood looks like and what effect this could have on his wallet.
We intend to make the city council aware of our situation and hold them to their promise not to evict for emptiness and their intention to limit the number of hotels in the city.
If you can make it we would very much appreciate your support and think that showing we are many may make a bigger statement.

Berlin: They‘re coming closer! International call to support Rigaer94

On the 15th of November, five hundred cops, including special forces with assault rifles, attacked Rigaer94 to make a house search in the case of a trouble in a shop some month before. The investigation is labeled as „robbery and bodily harm“. A video published by the shop owner shows, that this is an obvious lie in order to create a reason for a martial attack against rebellious structures. The pigs came at 6 o‘clock in the morning and managed to open the doors quickly, meanwhile aiming with their rifles towards anyone showing up at the windows.

In the same moment, four other houses were searched in different areas of Berlin in this issue. Later the Minister of Interior, Andreas Geisel (Socialdemocratic Party), declared that all this was not politically motivated but instead was an offensive against the criminal underworld. But everyone knows that the raids were nothing else than attacks on anti-authoritarian ideas and combative structures in order to claim the monopoly on violence.

In addition to the pigs, the guy who declares himself the lawyer of the official housowner (the british mailbox company Lafone Investments Ltd.) entered the scene in Rigaer Strasse in the company of some construction workers in order to destroy the doors of the house. But he was stopped by the presence of comrades and finally sent away by legal threats by the lawyer of Rigaer94. Nevertheless the presence of the dubious circles that claim the ownership of the house for several years now, is again a meaningful sign. The last time this happened was in 2016 during the attempted eviction of the house-bar Kadterschmiede. Back then we saw a massive, three-week long operation led and coordinated by the police. Their mission included various construction and security companies as well as the housekeeper-enterprise playing the role of the legal owner. But after the epic loss of the struggle for Kadterschmiede, our enemies failed in several court cases to proof the existence of a legal mandate.

Nevertheless the same people now again started proceedings against Rigaer94 to evict the bar Kadterschmiede and destroy the doors. The doors of Rigaer94 are known to be a thorn in the eye of those who want to pacify the house as well as the street. The Minister of Interior called the doors some month before an „obstacle for manhunt by police in this area“.
We do not know if the lawyer represents the Lafone Investments Ltd., nor do we know if the pigs will wait for a court decision or respect another decision in our favor. Even if so, though we choose to also use the legal procedure, we think that only our presence in the streets will prevent an attack or turn the attack on us into a counter-offensive against the state, its institutions and capital. This is after all the true purpose of anarchist projects like Rigaer94.

Lately, like most of the time the last years, there is a strong police presence in the area of Friedrichshain and an extensive use of the police helicopter. It looks like the strategists in the repressive administration of Berlin try to force us into a defensive sitiuation by confronting in the same time the Rigaer94 and the anarcha-feminist house-project Liebig34, that will lose its contracts in the beginning of the next year. There are high expectations for a strong resistance to defend Liebig 34 but with the threats against Rigaer94, which is just three houses away, we who are living and/or fighting in the „Dangerzone“ of Friedrichshain, need your help.

What can you do?

If we get informed about a police action against Rigaer94 to destroy the doors or evict the occupied rooms of the house with a court verdict, you will find informations here https://rigaer94.squat.net/. In that case invite people to come to Berlin and create with us a situation like in January and summer 2016, when the huge police operations against Rigaer94 were repelled by violent and non-violent mobilizations…
To turn the moment of attack on us into a moment of chaos, solidarity and destruction, we need more hands. Come to Berlin when the situation escalates – but be aware that our structures are limited.

If you are not able to come to Berlin – we are happy about every solidarity action. Everything with relations to german interests, to german economics and everything what belongs to repression apparatus and the capitalist system is a target.

Amsterdam: No eviction for hotels! The squatting collective ‘De Mobiele Eenheid’ stays!

Building squatted
The squat collective De Mobiele Eenheid has squatted the Gedempte Hamerkanaal 86 / Spijkerkade 2 building a few weeks ago and has started a non-commercial social centre with a program of activities almost every day. After only a few weeks that the collective released the building from the control of real estate violence, an end to this freedom was threatening: The owner, Uri Ben Yakir, stepped to court because he intends to turn the building into a hotel.

The judge ruled yesterday, November the 20th, that the squat collective Mobiele Eenheid can stay until February 1, 2019. The collective demands action from politicians and considers to appeal the decision in court and oppose the eviction.

Overcrowded with hotels
Amsterdam is full of hotels and overcrowded with tourists. There is little to show of the so-called Hotel stop that announced the previous city council. The owner of the squatted building in the Gedempte Hamerkanaal 86 / Spijkerkade 2, a diamond merchant, also knows that real diamonds nowadays have two legs, enter through Schiphol and pull roll-up luggage. If it is up to De Mobiele Eenheid, no hotel in the city will be added. As long as politics does not succeed, squatting is necessary.

The law ‘Kraken en Leegstand’offers the option of fining vacancy
It is not the first time that the building has been squatted. In 2006, the building was squatted and also back then the story of the owner was that he would like to establish a hotel. Just like then, the owner threatened to shoot the squatters to death and fire up the property. All in all, the building has been empty for more than 12 years. Unfortunately, the municipality has done nothing during all these years. Not even when the law ‘Kraken en Leegstand’ that has been in force since 1 October 2010 gave the opportunity for this. After all, this law enables municipalities to counter persistent vacancy through fines. The bill is therefore used only half and selectively. It is used for evicting squatters, but not for countering vacancy.

Withdraw hotel permit
Squat collective De Mobiele Eenheid doubts whether the (undesirable!) plans of the owner have not changed in the meantime. Although the owner already received an environmental permit for the construction of a hotel in 2013, nothing has happened since then. The Mobiele Eenheid’s research in the Chamber of Commerce showed that the B.V’s of the owner is financially under water. Amsterdam should do everything in its power to withdraw the permit for the hotel and to counter it applying fines on vacant premises.

If politicians don’t do anything, the Amsterdammer is the victim
In the coming years, a much-needed new neighbourhood will be erected around the Gedempte Hamerkanaal, where there is currently a business park. In total, 6,500 homes will be built. In a construction site, it will be impossible in the coming years to run a hotel properly. The expectation is that the building will be empty for years to come. The suspicion among the squatters is that the owner is awaiting the advance of the new housing estate and will try to sell his bankrupt property including building permit for the hotel. It is clear that the permit makes the property worth a lot more.

We do not give way to a hotel or land speculation!

Maastricht: Petition for the continuation of the Mandril

Dear lovely people, the continued existence of our beloved Mandril is at risk! The 5 year contract that was established in 2014 to use the space in Cabergerweg 45, is ending in November 2019. We are fighting for a contract renewal so that we can continue being an open space for creative expression, collaboration, and political engagement.

One way of contributing to the continued existence of the Mandril Cultural and Political Center is through this online petition. If you care about the Mandril and the continuation of this vibrant project sign & share this petition! We need you!!! Sign this petition to show that you support and value this self-organized, autonomous cultural freezone – a space of empowerment, creation, education, connection, and inspiration.

More information about the history & current situation:

The Mandril Cultural and Political Center was originally established as a squat in 2009 in Boschstraat and forced to relocate to its current location in 2014 to the former office building of the Radium factory. With the help of more than twenty volunteers, the rooms of the building were transformed from neglected, moldy spaces, full of stuff, to become usable for the continued activities and events of the Mandril. Over the course of a year windows were fixed, electricity installed, water pipes laid, rooms emptied, bathrooms tiled, walls painted, until the Mandril could finally continue organizing its diverse range of activities. Since then there has been continuous improvement in the space, including investments in fire security and safety measures. While much effort, time, and money has been invested by the Mandril community to move and make the spaces in Cabergerweg 45 usable, the former building in Boschstraat was unused until recently. Part of the reason why the Mandril relocated without resistance in 2014, was the prospect of a theatre group to move into the space directly after the eviction. Cuts to the cultural funds hindered these plans to unfold, leaving the building, formerly filled with life by the Mandril, standing empty for more than 3 years.

The relocation of the Mandril Cultural and Political Center did not only consume a lot of time, energy, and money to build a functional space, but also harmed the community running the project. The absence of public events for almost one year, due to the necessity to firstly rebuild a usable space, decreased the awareness about this project and therefore the engagement of people. Being an initiative based on the participation and input of a wide community, the Mandril as a cultural and political center suffered. It took until the beginning of this year, that the Mandril activity in terms of community engagement, and diversity, size, as well as quantity of events is comparable to those of the “old” Mandril in Boschstraat.

London: Squatters digest- low tide. Next comes the flood

Welcome to the Squatter’s Digest, a new column for Freedom News, highlighting the ongoings of the squat scene in London and beyond, along with providing opinions on the politics of said goings-on. Quality and coherence are not guaranteed.

The 29th of October saw 150 high-court bailiffs and police descend upon the Tidemill Community Garden in Deptford, London, at 6am, pulling people from their tents, dragging them out of tree-houses, and laying waste to the entire occupation. Occupiers climbed the trees and refused to vacate, while outside fights broke out between the supporters and bailiffs (County Enforcement, well-known to squatters, see Corporate Watch’s latest article on them), who of course were protected by members of the Metropolitan Police force. At some point in the afternoon the last squatter was removed from the trees and the garden was all but lost. But this didn’t stop the people outside from trying for one last push to regain entry to the site. Rushing for the fences, people were thrown to the ground and detained by bailiffs and police, but also linked arms and refused to allow their fellow protestors to be taken to the arrest vans, defiant to the last.

The Tidemill Garden was the latest flashpoint in the struggle against developers and councils pushing the gentrification agenda, and was another example of squatters and local residents working together to resist. There have been many such episodes throughout the last decades, some more successful than others (success these days tending to mean the building of positive relations between different groups rather than the securing of ongoing possession of properties). Tidemill has seen campaigners go from attending council meetings to ask the council to reconsider allowing them to stay, to attending council meetings to smash-up a councillor’s car. Not to say that was the squatters’ influence. But I digress. The collaboration between different social groups at Tidemill has felt like those of the 2014/2015 campaigns at the height of the housing crisis (who am I kidding, there will be no height of the crisis, it’ll keep getting worse). More collaboration I say, but I will return to this point in a bit.

Tidemill, despite only being a squat for 2 months before eviction, was a long-standing cultural space for the people of Deptford, and is yet another victim of neo-liberal capitalism. The removal and destruction of similar places seems to be trending right now internationally. Recent news see the ADM squat of Amsterdam, Netherlands, given its marching orders after 20+ years of being the focal point of much counter-cultural activity in the area. Similarly Villa Vegan, perhaps the most famous squat in Milan, Italy, was due to be evicted at the end of October. Villa Vegan has not yet been evicted, and to their credit they have continued to put on events and keep the squat functioning as usual, while also hosting meetings for supporters to get involved in the next steps. The Swamp in Utrecht, Netherlands also faced eviction just over one week ago, with the police and bailiffs prepared to put people’s lives in danger to ensure the eviction took place. And while we’re on the topic of communal spaces being taken away, the Centro de Cultura Libertária in Portugal (not a squat but an important anarchist centre) is facing eviction due to parasitic landlords (and squatters know all about that).

Not all is hopeless though! Earlier in October in Mannheim, Germany, activists involved in the Hambacher Forest protest site took occupation of the “eichengarten” or oak garden, and the adjoining buildings. They released a couple of communiques in solidarity with the Hambi protesters fighting against the RWE coal miners who are destroying ancient forests to further their profits. And in Montreuil, France, squatters took over a building used by artists as they were handing back the keys and have turned it into an autonomous community-based squat.

Aside from Tidemill, it’s hard to say that there has been anything to write home about in London these last months. There was of course the (Not The) Anarchist Bookfair Afterparty at the end of October, in which a large building and set of railway arches was taken over for a punk and techno party that raised loads of money for various causes, and that’s (nearly) always a good thing. And there appears to have been the gravitation of squat crews toward each other, at least in two locations in East and South-East London. Having multiple crews in an area can do wonders for mutual aid and support in trying times. Of course there are plenty of other squats out spread out across London and people should keep an eye out for any in their area to improve relationships and create local support networks. Mainly though it has been a bit of a quiet period in the squatting scene in London, at least from your writer’s perspective, a low tide if you will.

But after the low tide comes what they call the flood tide. Of course we don’t have a spare moon handy to do all the hard work for us, but we do have the ability to utilise the resources at our disposal. A previous Freedom article, by contributor AB, discussed the need for pulling ourselves out of crisis planning, and instead focusing on long-term organisation. But how do we do this while the system is geared massively in favour of property owners here? Our court system processes claims within a couple of weeks, and the bailiffs can act almost immediately upon the granting of a possession order. As AB says, it’s hard to keep track of people or organise together when everyone is moving every few weeks.

What we can do is take advantage of the more permanent spaces that we do have. More permanent squats tend to be ones that keep their heads down, and anyone caught peering over the parapet is liable to cop a swift arrow of court justice. This often means projects get put on hiatus or are abandoned altogether. There is much to be said for the temporary nature of squats, but having a space that people can go to and know it will always be there, and something that they can feel a part of, can make a huge difference.

There are social centres, anarchist or otherwise, in most cities around the UK. London has the 56a Anarchist Infoshop, the London Action Resource Centre (LARC), as well as Freedom Bookshop (or Decentre), and of course the Advisory Service for Squatters, which resides in the same building as Freedom. These are places that, for the foreseeable future, are not going anywhere, and the benefit of people using the space would be reciprocal. Seeing these places as not separate from the squat “milieu” but as an integral part of the political and cultural environment would allow for greater collaboration (I told you I would return to this point) between people of similar mindsets for mutual benefit (this of course comes with an anarchist bias, and it should be acknowledged that people squat for many reasons, and it should be seen as a tactic to address social issues rather than an identity to which to conform).

Participating in spaces that are active with groups of varying focuses can be a breath of fresh air when things begin to stale, and the fight becomes tedious or perhaps overwhelming. It’s important that people still look to organise amongst each other in squats, but also important to not get trapped in a bubble that fails to recognise the value of intersecting struggles and leaves us without support in times of need. It would be great to see more people feel like they could swing by their local social centre and be able to throw ideas about together about how to improve things and fight back. Being based in London, I would invite people to come down to the Advisory Service for Squatters, and rather than seeing it as an office from which a few people do legal work, see it as an “Idea Store” in which people can come down, pitch ideas to each other, work on projects together, and utilise the information available to them. People’s very presence would be putting back in to an organisation that has helped countless people over more than 40 years.

But it’s not just about the A.S.S. Wherever people are there will be other groups, whether they be housing, anarchist, or other sociopolitical leaning, who will be hopefully meeting in communal spaces. By linking up and developing relations with these groups we can start to work toward that long-term organising, and not just deal with crises as they happen. Let’s cause a flood that will drown the bastards (drowning cops, bailiffs, and landlords in spit does seem to fit a stereotypical crusty squatter aesthetic, thanks for the inspiration Bob).

Hopefully that’s got some of you up to speed with what’s going on in London and the wider squat scene. If you have any complaints or if I have missed out a particular topic or event that relates to squatting that you’d like covered in this monthly piece please get in touch at squattersdigest [at] riseup [dot] net and I’ll do my best to make it happen.

Amsterdam: ADM Action at Chidda Vastgoed BV

Today we went to the headquarters of Chidda Vastgoed BV to present a cheque of 100 million euros to the heirs of Bertus Lüske in a massive golden box. There were about 50 people at the action, and none of the heirs of Lüske came out to pick up the present.

Why did we do that?
The city of Amsterdam gives an absurd gift of 100 million euros to the heirs of Bertus Lüske, by evicting the residents of the ADM.
Today we went to give a huge gift to Chidda Vastgoed B.V. on behalf of the city of Amsterdam.
Due to the evacuation of the residents of the ADM site and allowing demolition- and asbestos removal company Koole BV to move to the ADM site, while their activities are not fitting with the perpetual clause that is part of the site, the value of the site is increasing enormously. Money that shouldn’t go to the real-estate mafia but back to the citizens of Amsterdam!
The Amsterdam’ municipality can prevent this but does not dare to make tough decisions. Symbolically we therefore handed over the ‘ship with money’ on behalf of the municipality. And what is more symbolic than a sea container of the former Amsterdam’ Drydock Company.

What has happened again?
The history of the ADM (Amsterdam Drydock Company) starts when in 1985 the shipyard tragically goes bankrupt. Before the final bankruptcy, the municipality of Amsterdam had the ground of the shipyard sold to the ADM shipyard for a symbolic price. The contractual agreement was that the land only can be used as shipyard (the perpetual clause). After being in disuse for years, the 42 hectares is sold to real estate boss Bertus ‘bulldozer’ Lüske in 1997 for 27 million guilders. In 2003 Lüske is killed in front of his own restaurant Frankendael on the Middenweg in Amsterdam East with an automatic gun. The murder of Lüske was one of the first in a long sinister wave of liquidations in the Amsterdam’ underworld. A large number of these murders still echo, as is been shown in the ongoing trial against Willem Holleeder these days.
The citizen: the victim
In 1996, the ‘Committee Van Traa’ exposes in their report the underworld practice of laundering ‘black money’, often gained by drug trafficking and prostitution trade, to the upper world through the purchase of real estate. For the municipality of Amsterdam Bertus Lüske was an example of this in those times and decided eventually to buy him out for 27 million guilders in 1997.

All his life he had been investing in real estate (especially around Rembrandtplein), speculated with it and sold it with large profit margins. He let it hang out as organizer of free fight- and kickbox galas. He also owned for a long time a tanning salon close to the Rembrandtplein, with hardly any customers (…) Tenants of his real estate were frequently confronted with violence and intimidation. He also purposely kept old building empty and let them deteriorate, so he could get easier a demolition permit. It was not surprising that squatters at that time called him their ‘favorite enemy’.

Almada (Portugal): The Center for Libertarian Culture needs your support!

The Centro de Cultura Libertária, an anarchist association with 44 years of activity in Cacilhas-Almada, Portugal, is again threatened. The continued pressure of the real estate business, the change in the rental law and the gentrification that forces the departure of residents from the central spaces of cities, the destruction of non-profit spaces or the closure of neighborhood stores, now also touches the CCL.

What is happening?
This is not the first time that the CCL’s permanence in its historic headquarters has been called into question.
Between 2009 and 2011 the Centro de Cultura Libertária resisted an eviction procedure initiated by the landlord. Only the solidarity of many collectives and individuals here and beyond allowed us to face the costs of the judicial process, which led to two trials and one appeal. In the end, we reached a rent increase agreement that allowed us to continue in the space without changes in the duration of the contract.
However, in 2014, as a result of the changes in the rent law in favor of property owners’ interests, the CCL contract duration was set at five years. At the end of 2018, we have reached the point where, as has happened to thousands of tenants, the continuation of the rent of our space will be at the mercy of the owner’s will and the conditions that he wants to impose on us.

Why support the CCL?
The CCL is an anarchist cultural centre founded in 1974 by old libertarian militants who resisted the dictatorship, occupying since then the space rented at number 121 Rua Candido dos Reis, in Cacilhas-Almada. The Center has a unique library and archive in Portugal, with documents produced over the last hundred years, as well as a bookshop promoting libertarian culture. It has been a fundamental space for anarchism in Portugal, welcoming successive generations of libertarians. During its existence, the Center hosted numerous activities, such as debates, meetings, reading circles, video sessions, workshops, dinners and various learning workshops, and served as home to many libertarian groups and collectives. Different publications came out of the space, such as the Voz Anarquista in the 1970s, Antithesis in the 1980s, the Anarchist Information Bulletin in the 1990s, and Húmus magazine in the first decade of this century.
As an anarchist association, the functioning of the CCL’s internal organisation is horizontal and is based on the assembly of its members, where decisions are made and the tasks inherent to the life of the association are distributed. Participation in the CCL is always voluntary, unpaid and non-profit. The only sources of funding are membership fees, the bookstore, dinners and solidarity donations.

What future for the CCL?
We do not want the Centro de Cultura Libertária to end! We want it to continue to exist as an active libertarian association for many years!
But at the moment the future of the CCL is open: it can remain in the same space, paying a much higher rent, or move to a new space, where we would try to have better conditions for our activities, but where expenses will also be higher.
In both cases, and given the conditions imposed by the current housing market bubble, we know that we will need financial means that we do not have. For this reason, we will start a fundraising campaign, which will include crowdfunding, concerts, dinners and other initiatives.
We count on your solidarity support so that together we can guarantee a future for the CCL.

Zeist (Netherlands): Callout for support in resistance to illegal eviction

Yesterday the police illegally evicted the recently squatted building at Utrechtseweg 86, Zeist. The squatters had written statement from a neighbour that he had seen them in the building for over 24 hours, but still the police claimed the squatters were ‘caught in the act’, and evicted on those grounds.
The police refused to arrest or ID anyone, even when they had to forcefully evict the building. One person refused to cooperate to the point that they were forced to arrest them, but they were released hours later without charge. This unwillingness to bring this case to court proves that the police know that they are acting illegally.
Today the building was re-squatted. After long discussion between the acting officer of justice, the squatters, and the police, the squatters were given until 18.00 to leave. We will not leave!
This is a call out for support inside and outside of the building. The police in and around Utrecht are increasingly deciding to ignore the house-peace of squatters, and are finding any excuse to evict squats in the moment which they appear. We aim to gather as many people as possible inside and outside the building, to make it as difficult as we can for them to do so.
We have a working legal team, the deadline for the eviction is 18,00 today.

The Hague: Pand Egypte squatted and evicted

Today (6 november) a recently squatted house in the Archipelbuurt in The Hague was evicted. The building is owned by the Egyptian government and served for decades as the residence of the Egyptian ambassador. After more than 10 years of vacancy it is in a miserable condition. Instead of respecting the domestic peace established by the squatters, the police decided today to evict the building under false pretexts. It is already the 4th unlawful eviction by the Haaglanden police force this year.

This afternoon the squatters of Surinamestraat 20 announced to the owner and police that they have been using the building as a living space since Saturday. The Egyptian ambassador and his lads, not charmed by the action, used threatening language on the spot. They thought that the building would be on Egyptian territory and that therefore no Dutch laws would apply. The police, who had been informed of the action by a written notification and by telephone by the squatters, confirmed after consultation that the territory table did not give cause for eviction. Nor did a situation arise that made it opportune for the police to evict on criminal grounds.

Initially, a discussion between the embassy police, the squatters’ spokesperson and the Egyptians was started, but when the Hague police force started to interfere in the situation, it soon became clear that they would not be taking the facts and observing the policy line on squatting drawn up by the Public Prosecution Service so closely this afternoon. Out of sheer powerlessness, it was thrown back into a ‘red-handedness’, even though it was the squatters themselves who had informed the police of the newly started habitation. A few of the local residents who flocked in, who were predominantly positive about the action, declared to the police that nobody in the street knew about the habitation, until friends of the squatters were handing out leaflets in front of the building. The police were asked why they did not want to accept the testimonies of the local residents and the photo proof of domestic peace (via the Twitter timeline) as ‘exculpatory evidence’, when no ‘incriminating evidence’ had been found that could support their false suspicion. Sorry, but we’re going to evict anyway”’, said the officer who refused to put in contact the squatters’ lawyer with the police boss.

The decision had already been made. Knowingly, the police refused to take note of the facts and applicable guidelines – once again, the ‘flagrant act is clearing’ criterion was abused. Again a building was evicted for emptiness and further decay. Again, the police acted as a free fight squad for an unwilling owner. Again, squatters were not given the opportunity to institute summary proceedings against eviction. At the end of the afternoon three people were arrested in the building, to which the police granted themselves access with the cooperation of locksmith Van Delft. They are currently being held in police station Jan Hendrikstraat, where they unfortunately have to spend the night.

07/11/2018 – 15:27 – update:

The 3 detainees were insured this morning, so that they can be held longer than the maximum 9-hour pre-trial detention period (excluding the hours between 00:00 and 09:00). The exact reason why they should stay longer is not yet clear.

Meanwhile, the message has been picked up by the media and the political discussion surrounding unlawful evictions by the Hague police has flared up again. Now that this seems to take on a structural character, housing law (constitution/EVRM) will come under pressure and legal steps will therefore also have to be taken.

Not only on the political and legal level, but also on the social level, yesterday’s unfair police action led to indignation. After all, why has the government not taken action in all these years against an owner who allows a monument to collapse in violation of the law and regulations, hiding behind diplomatic treaties, and is there then any capacity to suppress a citizens’ initiative that finally puts a stop to this with a lot of display of power? In other words: why does the police abuse the law to act as the protector of the ‘passive demolishers’ of the Couperushuis?

Amsterdam: 15 december, demonstration against the eviction of Amsterdam!

15 december 2018, 15:00, Daniel Meyerplein, Amsterdam

We are angry about the sale of the city: tourism, Airbnb, gentrification, sale of the social housing stock, segregation of neighborhoods and neighborhoods, the hunt on social centers and non-profit organizations, small businesses get into trouble because of extreme rents.  The city is becoming unaffordable. Young people and students can’t find an affordable place anywhere. Amsterdammers no longer know where their children should live. Teacher shortage because there is no affordable housing for new teachers, nurses, anymore. Tenants’ rights are being eroded. More and more temporary rental contracts, good housing disappearing from the social stock, waiting lists are endless. Properties are bought up to be used as Airbnb hotels. As the city becomes more commercial, free spaces disappear to make way for monoculture. All of Amsterdam has an interest in the preservation of the ADM, as the largest international sanctuary. 150 residents and countless small businesses and initiatives, unique events and festivals that cannot take place anywhere else in Amsterdam have to make way for a nonsensical and unrealistic business plan. But that doesn’t matter because once vacated, the land and port will increase in value enormously and that’s what it’s all about. Precisely to prevent speculation, the city council decided that only a shipyard may be built on the site, but now the city suddenly does not have a hard time. The ADM site belonged to the city of Amsterdam and must be preserved for the city! We invite everyone to stop the demolition and sale of the city. The pressure on the social housing sector, social living/working premises, self-managed premises and free stages is increasing all the time. If the ADM has to disappear, who is next in line? What happened at the Haarlemmerpoort must not be repeated. What are we going to do to protect affordable living and working places, which are becoming increasingly scarce: the purpose of this demo is to send out a signal that we are fed up: the city belongs to all of us: no exclusion, no social segregation, no monoculture. We want to counter pressure against creating, to defend our interests in a free, open and accessible city. Turn this latent potential and this latent dissatisfaction into a warm Christmas. 15 December 15:00h , daniel meyerplein, amsterdam

Amsterdam: De Mobiele Eenheid goes to court!

Three weeks ago, the collective De Mobiele Eenheid squatted the building Gedempt Hamerkanaal 86, Spijkerkade 2 in Amsterdam Noord. To counteract the commercialisation, mass-tourism and precarious housing market, we have created a social centre offering a weekly program. Soon after the building’s occupation in opposition to an all-encompassing property-based violence, the end is near. Following dangerous threats, the owner of the building is summoning the collective to court, based on his supposed plan to turn the building into a hotel.

Amsterdam contains a disproportionate number of hotels and is completely over-crowded. The hotel stop decreed by the previous city government, is hardly noticeable. But the owner in question, a diamond merchant and property speculator, knows that real diamonds nowadays have two legs, arrive in Schiphol and pull wheelie bags.

His presented plans are not only problematic, but also highly questionable. In 2006, the building was squatted for the first time and already then, the plan was to build a hotel. Besides an environmental permit in 2013, the owner has undertaken little to no action hinting at reconstruction of the building. Overall, the greatest part of his property has been standing empty for many years.

In the upcoming years, a new housing development project will be realised in the area surrounding Gedempt Hamerkanaal, the so-called Hamerkwartier, which is currently comprised of mostly businesses. According to the plan, altogether 6.500 flats will be built, and real estate value will rise significantly. The owner of Gedempt Hamerkanaal 86, Spijkerkade 2 is therefore likely to await the development so as to sell his property for a higher profit.

Thus, his plans will presumably result in renewed, long-lasting vacancy due to property speculation, instead of the realisation of an actual zoning plan in the near future. In the face of dire housing shortages, escalating prices and the prevalence of precarious living, emptiness cannot be justified. The municipality has done little to act against emptiness. Since the introduction of the law “kraken en leegstand” concerning squatting and emptiness on October 1, 2010, municipalities are able to counter persistent vacancy by means of fines. In reality, only half of this law is put into practice. It is used to justify the eviction of squatters, but not to counter vacancy.

De Mobiele Eenheid will go to court today, on November 6, and continue to use the building as a non-commercial, horizontal social space as well as living space for people in precarious housing situations.

We are not evicted for hotels, property speculation and anti-squats!

Madrid: Inauguration of the Ateneo Libertario in Vallekas

In these times of generalized apathy, political opportunism, new contestatory fashions coming directly from the university, from iphone and misery living together, in short, in these times where it seems that the molecular development of an amoeba is easier than any type of social change, we follow our own. Combating capitalist modernity, reformism and, of course, the State. Unlearning their values and practices, and working for the construction of free people. On this occasion, we are pleased to announce the opening of the new Ateneo Libertario de Vallekas.
It will be located at Calle Párroco Don Emilio Franco nº 59, near the Nueva Numancia metro station and the Entrevias railway station. We are aware that we are taking possession of a space with an eviction process nearing its end. This circumstance only reaffirms our refusal to cease our efforts.
This new project aims to build a space for integral formation, at all levels: manual, intellectual, emotional … for which we will use different tools such as workshops, courses, talks, debates, round tables, conferences …

On the other hand, we also intend to form ourselves as a group to participate in a clear and active way in the social and political life of the neighborhood from a revolutionary perspective: evidencing the injustices of the system, encouraging self-management, direct action, solidarity among oppressed people, individual and collective awareness, and self-organized social action. We believe that it is only by starting from below and acting in the everyday that we can profoundly and radically change society. For no political party is going to fight for us.
We encourage you to get to know us and to attend the inauguration event that we will hold on November 3 and 4, 2018. Where we will present the project, at the same time as a fanzine on the ateneos and listen to an interesting talk about ateneos in Vallekas and another on the problems of the neighborhood about video surveillance and social control. The day will be accompanied by delicious artisanal beer, juices, vegan dinner and live music.

Madrid-Barcelona: Estate agents attacked in solidarity with the CSOA La Gatonera and the CSO Ka La Trava

Thursday September 27, the windows of estate agency Tecnocasa in Vallekas were shattered. The agency was also covered in paint. This action aims to encourage the comrades of the CSOA La Gatonera (Carabanchel-Madrid) and Ka La Trava (Gràcia-Barcelona), as well as all the people who struggle in defence of squats as a revolutionary tool.
Neighbourhoods are being transformed by capitalist speculation, gentrification being a tightening of screws in a cyclical process that affects all the cities of the world. Real estate agencies and other capitalist entities such as banks and speculators are responsible. Let’s spread the attack against them and build bridges based on solidarity and attack.
Refusing to negotiate with the State, the town hall or private property and resisting the scoundrels and the police must have an echo of solidarity in the form of seeking and spreading the struggle. This is only the beginning and we call for the reproduction of the attack, overcoming any path of mediation and negotiation with power. We do not negotiate with the State and capital.
Solidarity and attack with the squatted social centres!
War on capitalist speculation!

Some anarchists

Since the writing and publication of this communique, Ka La Trava has been evicted. On October 18th, the Mossos d’Esquadra evicted the place. That same evening, hundreds of people took to the streets of the Gracia neighbourhood, attacking property and everything that keeps this world going.

Attacks in solidarity with the evicted squat Ka La Trava in Barcelona:

On October 21 in Barcelona, three banks and an estate agency are attacked (windows tagged and destroyed), in the districts of Gràcia and Sants respectively. In the evening of Wednesday, October 24, one of the agencies of estate agency Tecnocasa is tagged.

Amsterdam: ADM sympathizers squat in centre

ADM Sympathizers squatted out of protest a premises in the city center

On Sunday 28 October, a number of ADM sympathizers squatted a building in the Red-light district; Oudekerksplein 30.

The fringes of Amsterdam also belong in the city center

After hearing alderman Kock’s proposal to move the ADM to Almere in two years, many were stunned. One could not believe that the alderman had so little understanding of the social added value that Free-spaces & Fringes have for the city of Amsterdam. Recently, even in the media it was pointed out that the city loses its soul now that the fringes of Amsterdam are in Zaandam. Does Kock really want to move the fringes of Amsterdam to Almere?

To counter the doom scenario of a soulless city, we have squatted a building in the Red-light district, where a new temporary cultural center will be erected. In this way we want to add liveliness, creativity and especially inspiration to the city. A much needed counterweight to the gentrification that is hitting with full force.

On the two upper floors people will be living. With this we also make a statement against the housing shortage which now reaches yet another peak, especially regarding social housing. Waiting times of fifteen years are no exception in the city of Amsterdam.

The ground floor will serve as a meeting place for people from the neighborhood, for example a vegan eatery, small-scale cultural- and social activities. This space will also serve as the ADM Action Center. Finally, we want to give a counter-sound to the yuppie culture that also has a big impact on our Red-light district.

Milan: Villa Vegan under eviction threat

In recent days it has come rumor that they want to evict Villa Vegan Tuesday, October 30th.
We believe it is a trust information and we are determined to resist, so let’s make a call to all the people in solidarity reach us to prepare together resistance and mobilization against the eviction. It is welcome anyone who wants to support the place, who has crossed over the years, who has carried on the struggles that here have found complicity, all the comrades who they think that if they want to evict an anarchist space occupied by 20 years must cost him dear.

In all these years of occupation Villa Vegan has hosted comrades from all over the world, has given logistical support to many self-managed projects, especially those from the hardcore punk scene, and a lots of fights, including those of against prison system and in solidarity to prisoners, ecologists and for liberation animal, against racism and CIEs (renamed then CPR), transfeminist queer and against gender violence, antifascist; struggles that refuse relations with institutions and always in opposition to the capitalist system and the state.

With the evacuation of the occupied spaces, the interminable overbuilding, the raids against the migrants, irregular and unwanted people of each type, the urban “redevelopment” of the neighborhoods, the growing militarization and surveillance of the roads, they want to transform the places where we live in the showcase cities useful only to run the economy and in dormitories for those included in the rhythm of production and consumption, closing more and more every possible resistance space. For this reason every eviction does not concern only the specific place that comes attacked but the more general plan of social control by the political and economic power, and must be opposed.

We invite those who can pass and stop – even to sleep – in Villa Vegan in these days.

Updates – Tuesday 30th October

This morning Villa’s eviction didn’t happen. We stand ready to defend the place.

In the last few days lots of people came bringing solidarity and we continued organising the resistance together, working on the barricades and discussing on what to do in case of actual eviction.

The Halloween Taz organized by Telos Collective from Saronno has been moved to Villa Vegan, on this blog you can find a communique about the need of occupation as a practice and the decision of moving this event.

We reiterate the call to bring direct support, being present here and organizing together.

Useful things to bring here: food, construction materials and tools.

Next appointments in Villa:

Wednesday 31st october: Punk show to support the prisoners of Scripta Manent Operation.

Utrecht: Callout for solidarity with the Swamp

This week the judge decided to make the eviction of the Swamp possible. This means that birds, rabbits, bats, rats, insects and people lose their living space and a young forest will be killed. All to make space for more asphalt, another distribution center and a bus parking that could be built somewhere else.
The judge ignored that the owner, Borghese Real Estate B.V., hasn’t even asked for permits to cut the trees on the part of the Swamp that is not destroyed yet.
We won’t let yet another one of the very few places of green in the city of Utrecht be killed. We won’t move from out self built community where we live together with nature, as self sufficient as possible, and free.
We call out to all people to defend nature here with us, or in your own way, everywhere. We expect the eviction of the Swamp soon after Wednesday the 31st of October, next week.

Tagamanent (Catalonia): Suspension of judicial process. The Moli remains!

We have achieved a “temporary” procedural suspension of our judicial process, enabling us to challenge this masquerade of justice. This seems to be the only way to face the complaint of express eviction proposed by the owner, thus giving us time to defend ourselves judicially and demonstrate all the work done during these years.

Even so, we know that we do not have much time and that we have to be attentive to prepare our response with all possible means to stop the eviction. During the next days there will be activities, support meals and actions from home, we hope to continue to face all together.

Amsterdam: Mobiele Eenheid, new collective on the Gedempt Hamerkanaal in Noord

Press statement, 17 october 2018

Today, the Mobiele Eenheid, a collective of involved Amsterdammers, occupied the old Gedempt Hamerkanaal 86. The building has been empty for over a year without any concrete plans for use in the near future. We plan to transform this badly maintained building into a non-commercial social center; a space by and for people to come together, exchange ideas and skills, work collectively and actively influence the developments in the city.

We oppose the current developments in the city. Over the last 5 years the average price of a house in Amsterdam has gone up by more than 80%. Due to high rent many inhabitants have been pushed out (of their homes) and the city. Many are forced to give up their tenancy rights and live in anti-squats, currently a conventional alternative to renting, even though it enables real estate speculation. In addition, gentrification and tourism are changing Amsterdam. Space for people with a small wallet or non-profit initiatives have basically disappeared. The last free-spaces are currently under threat. Amsterdam is increasingly becoming an expensive, predictable, individualistic and exclusive city, whereas we want to live in a city that is diverse and inclusive.

This is why we are opening up this space for the benefit of the local community and the residents of Amsterdam. Together we can create a stronger sense of community and a voice against current developments. Through a program with political debate, music, art and communal projects, we want to connect and involve anyone that wants to be a part of the city’s community and potentially participate in its development. Squatting unused property for public benefit has a long tradition in our city and we will continue.

We run this place collectively and voluntarily. You are very welcome to pass by during one of our events, or to join and help out!

We see that the commercialisation, gentrification and growing tourism are making of Amsterdam an expensive and exclusive city. Amsterdam is becoming more individualistic, more monotonous and boring. Also, the city is now a playground for tourists and a board game for the rich, who speculate with the spaces of the city, entirely not giving a damn about us, the people who use those spaces, whether to live or to meet.

We firmly believe that it is not the right of the rich to play with the buildings of the city or to decide what to do with them. Since we also enjoy a lot of having fun with and in the city, we decided to start playing, but we are doing it in our own way: we are starting a non-commercial, self-organised, autonomous, and free space.
