UMass Student Scientists Learn to Sequence DNA

Professor Elsbeth Walker's popular Gene and Genome Analysis Class is helping to reshape the biology curriculum at UMass Amherst to center on building scientific skills. Funded by a prestigious Howard Hughes Medical Institute grant, the class creates student teams that use bioinformatic tools and wet bench techniques to sequence a gene's DNA and to identify the gene's biological function. The students publish their work in a database to make their unique research available to the scientific community.
