The emerald ash borer, Agrilus planipennis, has killed tens of millions of ash trees in a wide swath from Michigan to New York to Kentucky. The exotic beetle is considered a serious emergent invasive threatening tree health across New England. The Outsmart Invasive Species Project developed by UMass Amherst researchers and partners enables citizen scientists to collect data on invasive species in the field and send data via smartphone to scientists working to control them.
