Public Art: Two Ways of Looking at an Elm Tree
The image above shows a small detail from one of two 12 x 24 foot banners mounted on the south façade of the UMass Fine Arts Center by artist and UMass alumna Carolyn Webb. Organized by the University Museum of Contemporary Art working in collaboration with the Department of Art, Architecture, and Art History, the series of temporary public art projects is designed to encourage creative dialogue about the nature of public art. Abstract sculptor Carolyn Webb used both digital technology and traditional printmaking techniques to create the banners, inspired by an elm tree near the Campus Pond – one of the ‘Gift Trees" on campus.
