New Nanoparticle: Environmental Chemist Gives Toxicity Warning

Pictured above is a schematic diagram illustrating the mechanisms of layered black phosphorus (BP) toxicity. UMass Amherst Environmental and Soil Chemist Baoshan Xing reports toxicity test results for different thickness of layered BP in three cell lines in a recent cover story of the journal Small. His findings include a disruption of cell membrane integrity related to layered BP particle size, plus concentration - and cell-type-dependent cytotoxicity. Xing and his colleagues are among the first to work with this material and to study its environmental implications, as well as its impact on the human body. (Read More)
