Lives of the Leatherbacks: Protecting the Species
Leatherback sea turtles are considered an endangered species worldwide. Since 2007, researchers at the Large Pelagics Research Center have been using GPS-linked satellite tags like the one in the image above to track leatherback sea turtles to better understand migration patterns, distribution, habitat use, foraging ecology, physiology, population structure, and health. The UMass Center, based in Gloucester and affiliated with the Department of Environmental Conservation, conducts research to support ecosystem-based management strategies for open ocean species.
