Cell Basics: Analyzing Gene Expression to Determine High Breast Cancer Risk

Joseph Jerry (Professor of Veterinary and Animal Sciences and Science Director, Pioneer Valley Life Sciences Institute) and his research team use images like these to analyze gene expression in premalignant tissue and categorize the atypia. It has already been established that approximately 20 percent of women diagnosed with atypical hyperplasia will develop breast cancer, yet researchers remain unsure as to which ones. By better understanding the premalignant lesions, the research team is creating genetic tests to identify the subset at highest risk so they can be treated with chemo-preventive therapies.
