Black: Charting a Path for Afro-American Studies

The painting detail in the image above–by artist Nelson Stevens, UMass Amherst Emeritus Professor of Afro-American Studies and Art–graces the cover of a new book, SOS: Calling All People, A Black Arts Movement Reader, a landmark of writings from the black arts movement. Published by the University of Massachusetts Press, it is co-edited by Professors John Bracey and James Smethurst of the UMass Amherst Afro-American Studies Department and Sonia Sanchez, poet and Emerita Professor Temple University. John Bracey has been honored for his lifelong contributions to the field of African American Studies and is now a Spotlight Scholar.
