Graphic image in color showing incoming solar radiation on a glass facade
Iconic: Modeling Energy Efficiency in Modern Architecture

The image above is a graphic visualization of insolation (incoming solar radiation) on the eastern façade of the Milam Residence, the iconic Modernist home, designed by Paul Rudolph. The graphic detail demonstrates the degree of protection afforded to this primarily glass façade by the structure's monumental shading geometry. The image was produced using Autodesk Ecotect, an energy modeling software that allows the programmer to examine various energy related properties of a building such as heating, cooling, and solar loads.  UMass Amherst green building experts Simi Hoque, Carl Fiocchi and colleagues are using this tool to document the environmental performance of this and other iconic modernist homes. Learn More.
