Infrared thermography is often used to detect heat-loss in a building’s exterior walls. While this technology provides usable temperature data and presents it as false-color images, these images are only two-dimensional and in most cases of low resolution. By mapping thermography images onto three-dimensional models of buildings as depicted in the image above, Alexander Schreyer and colleagues (Building and Construction Technology Program and Architecture and Design  Architecture and Design) can interactively explore a building’s thermal performance and energy efficiency. Because many individual images can be mapped onto a building, overall resolution and accuracy is improved. Learn more.
