Gold-of-Pleasure: Camelina as Cellulosic Feedstock

The image above shows Camelina sativa leaf discs growing on tissue culture media for somatic embryogenesis in the laboratory of plant and soil scientist Om Parkash. In this tissue culture media, a single leaf cell can make somatic embryos that can produce a full plant. The researchers are developing a tissue regeneration method in camelina plants for over expression of desired genes by nuclear as well as chloroplast engineering for enhanced biomass production and seed oil content. This research is an integral part of the TIMBR biomass team working to develop sustainable, cellulosic feedstocks with high biomass yield to advance biorenewable fuels. Learn more
