The image above depicts the head of a bonefish (Albula spp.) - note the distinctive mouth of a ‘bottom feeder’. This ancient group of fishes is an enigma since rarely do we think of a bottom feeder as powerful and worth catching on hook and line, but these fish form the basis of a lucrative catch-and-release recreational fishery. Fish ecologist Andy Danylchuk and his colleagues study the ecology and development of best practices for catch and release of bonefish and other species. As the popularity of recreational angling for many fish species grows, so does the benefit of this leisure activity to local and regional economies. Learn more.
