Bio-Oil Building Blocks
These jars are filled with pyrolysis oils produced by the bio-oil pyrolysis pilot plant designed by chemical engineers in the Huber research group at UMass Amherst. The group is developing clean technologies to use biomass in an economical way to produce renewable gasoline, diesel fuel, jet fuel, and chemicals. The group has developed a new catalyst that boosts the yield for five key "building blocks of the chemical industry" by 40 percent. The process could reduce industry’s reliance on fossil fuels to produce industrial chemicals worth an estimated $400 billion annually. Learn more
