The image above shows a detail of an accelerometer, a device that measures the amount and intensity of movement. Using wearable monitors to assess physical activity dose, UMass Amherst kinesiologist Patty Freedson (Public Health and Health Sciences) and her colleagues are using accelerometer-based data processing methods to accurately quantify the amount and intensity of physical activity to better understand the “dose” of activity that correlates to positive health outcomes. These wearable sensing devices and smartphone apps are part of the burgeoning field of personal health monitoring. Learn more.
