About CVIP:
The office of Commercial Ventures and Intellectual Property (CVIP) was established for all five campuses in September 1995 to commercialize University research. The Amherst office was founded in January 1997 to advance and broaden the Amherst campus’s potential intellectual property to commercial partners. The Central CVIP is located in Shrewsbury, MA where it is part of the President's Office.
CVIP at UMass Amherst is responsible for evaluating, protecting and commercializing UMass research that may have commercial value through licensing to startup companies and appropriate commercial firms. Additionally, we strive to create a customer-friendly system that assists faculty, staff and students in securing sponsored research funds and to transform their ideas, inventions and creative works into commercially viable products, processes and services that have economic payback to the inventors, the sponsors and the university. A complimentary objective is to create a business and industry-friendly system that promotes research collaboration at UMass Amherst and subsequent commercialization of valuable inventions. CVIP also manages the patenting process, working with outside patent counsel to protect University intellectual property (IP) in the United States and abroad.
CVIP’s other responsibilities include:
- Review and execution of Materials Transfer Agreements (MTAs) to ensure protection of University's IP, and to protect the institution against improper use of our researchers' material
- Review and execution of Confidential Disclosure Agreements (CDAs)
- Assisting in the documentation of Invention Disclosures
- Proactively marketing UMass technology
- Negotiating the "best deal" via University agreements (licenses, options, etc.)
- Assisting with contacts and business plan advice on the creation of new businesses within the Commonwealth of Massachusetts
- Assisting the Office of Grants and Contracts Administration (OGCA) with the intellectual property clauses for Sponsored Research Agreements

FEATURED TECHNOLOGY
UMA 10-39
by Igor Kaltashov, Ph.D.
Temperature Controlled Electrospray Ionization Source
This technology provides a temperature-controlled electrospray ionization (ESI) source that allows for highly precise and accurate characterization of the thermal stability and aggregation of proteins by ESI mass spectrometry (MS).
Applications:
Characterization of stability and aggregation of biopharmaceutical products
Characterization of thermal denaturation of biopolymers such as proteins and nucleic acids
